Post subject: Question about tripod
Archived from groups: rec>photo>digital>slr-systems (more info?)

I have a question about what to expect from a new tripod system I purchased.
I have a Gitzo 1228 Mk2 Reporter with a Kirk BH-3 head on the way. I have
never used such a nice support system for my photography in the past, but
figured it would be right to get a good start rather than flounder along the
way with substandard equipment. In any event, I decided to get the BH-3
because of the good reviews that I have read and the fact that I don't have
any really heavy equipment as of yet.

Does anybody out there have a similar system including the BH-3 ball head? If
so, what is the most "camera" you have been able to effectively mount on it?
I plan to eventually upgrade to the Nikkor 70-200 2.8 AF-S VR and a Nikkor 300
2.8 AF-S. I also eventually plan the Nikkor 2x teleconverter. Right now I
use the Nikon D70 for a camera body, but plan to eventually upgrade to its
successor or to the Nikon D200, depending up what is available when I feel the
need (it might be several years down the road I suppose).

Your choice of tripods is excellent. I own the self leveling version.
But do take a look at Really Right Stuff ball heads and L-brackets. The
workmanship is outstanding! I own the quick release BH-40 with an
L-bracket that supports my camera.

Good grief, you laid out all that money in the face of such ignorance??

Fortunately, in this case, you "over bought", which is generally a good
idea. You'll have no trouble at all, user-interface issues
notwithstanding.

I recently got that tripod and took advantage of the free head offer from
www.warehouseexpress.com. It's a well made piece of equipment. I didn't
like the free Gitzo head when it arrived so asked if I could swap it for a
cheaper Gitzo ball and socket - they did - and the actually credited me for
the difference in the price of the heads.

No, indeed I did a lot of research. What I am really asking is if I should
have bought the BH-1 rather than the BH-3. I couldn't find any real specs on
the website to indicate what I could really expect from that ball head. I did
get a chance to take a look at the BH-1 in person (Elizabeth from the Rocky
Mountain School of Photography has on on her tripod and I was fortunate enough
to take one of her classes in St. Paul a couple of weeks back Smile

Good to hear ... that is exactly what I had planned to do.
