Archived from groups: rec>photo>film+labs (more info?)

OK, so there's an event coming up in our town next weekend, and I wanna know
what type of slide film I should get.

The subject is quite simple - hot air balloons. There are two launches, one
in the morning (6am), and one in the afternoon (5:30pm).

I've narrowed it down to a few choices :

Kodak E100GX - for the warm tones
Kodak E100VS - saturation
Fuji Provia 100F
Fuji Velvia 100F
and possibly Fuji Provia 400F.

Now, what would your choice be for such an event? I'm intending to scan and
enlarge to between 8x10 and 13x19. I'm hoping to order the film through b+h
on friday or thursday afternoon... so quick responses would be wonderful Smile

Thank you all for your help (in advance).

Lisa,

The new Velvia 100F would be great to keep the warm tone of the 'glow'
and give a deep saturation of the colors. It would be my choice if I was
photographing a 'balloon glow' event pushed to 200. The E100GX is as warm,
but not as saturated. If you don't want overly warm images, the Provia
would be my personal choice, but I might avoid it if I was photographing at
mid-day, switching back to the Velvia at 100. Both will give excellent
prints up to 16X20 from 35.

Jim :

Thank you for your opinion - having never really used Velvia before
(I've tended to stick with Provia in most cases), I was wary of it,
and before the 100 came out, I would have tended to avoid it as i
would have thought that 50 was just a little too slow for my liking...

if you're interested, this is the festival :
http://www.greatfallsballoonfestival.org/

I've used the Kodak E100 VS, but since i've not had it processed yet,
I don't really know the colors that well, but what I want is
saturation.. A warm tone would be good, especially aruond
sundown/sunrise I would assume.. I'm not sure if i'll do the sunrise
launching, i'm not a morning person Wink

But I also see this as a time to experiment with new films - I'll be
entering the competition that they've got going, and because of that,
I don't really want to deal with my out of date astia i've got in the
fridge - then again - astia wouldn't really be good for that anyway...
It was given to me - i'm hoping to find a lab in the area (or a mail
lab) that I can use the astia and cross-process it....

Anyways, I'm wandering off the subject as usual...

I'll be sure to order at least one roll of Velvia... But do you think
100 would do? Or should I get some provia 400 also... or can velvia be
pushed???

Velvia 50 or 100
E100VS or GX
Sensia (a hair muted)

For one event attemt to be close in to the launch and bring the wider
angle lenses. For the other attempt to be upwind/upsun and bring your
longer lenses. Winds are predominently from the west in North America,
so at the evening launch, being upwind usually places the sun behind you.

With the sunrising/setting, the Velvia's might be a bit too hot looking.
Consider E100S, Provia 100 or Sensia as the alternates.

If it is a "mass start" it is hard to get compositions of 1 or just a
few baloons alone... There will often be other balloons in the background.

While they move slowly, it is actually tough to get a good composition
as they are moving... use a tripod/monopod and crop a bit loosely in the
viewfinder... better less full than touching the edges of the frame.
You can crop later.

The next time I go to one of these, I'm going up on a balloon for the
aeriel shots of other balloons over the fields and towns.

Cheers,

Sounds like fun. I have problems with the color of the Fuji slide films. I
can understand how people would like them but I don't. Smile I would tend
towards the Kodak VS to get the colors of the balloons to "pop". I would
also bring some GX to get the softer more moody shots of the crews filling
up the balloons in the early morning.

Definitely Velvia.
I just cannot get enough of Velvia's colours!

?Thank you all for your responses..
I've come to a decision and have made the following choices :
1 roll provia 100
2 rolls velvia 100
1 roll E100GX.

as a standby : 1 roll ektachrome 400. (and half a roll thats still in my
camera)

even on the off chance I don't use all the film, oh well... more film to
play with later on!!

Thanks once again, i'll be sure to let you know how well they perform...

Lisa,

If you miss this, you lost a major portion of the beauty of a balloon
festival. Gotta do it! Better than getting up early, party all night and
just go:~)

Seriously, if you want some spectacular shot, that is if the weather
plays along, get west to north west of the balloons and wait for the sun.
Velvia and this time of the morning with that wonderful warm lighting and
the saturation of the colors, it'll be wow twice! The first when you trip
the shutter, the second when you get the slides back.

Another tip. Rate the Velvia for normal speed at about 80. You'll get a
bit better exposure. If you've got a particularly bright scene, you can
always close down a third to half a stop.

Have more fun than allowed...

Jim

Ok, this I'm a little confused about... rate at 80...

So, I'll be getting the 100 Velvia (my last post was myseteriously gobbled
up and spit back out as another person's posts with my name on it), so, I
change the ISO to 80. And after that? I just drop it off at a lab and get
them to process at 100? Or do I get them to pull process it to 80?

And wouldn't closing down to 1/3- 1/2 a stop saturate the colors a little
too much? I'm just curious... Never experimented with slide film that way -
always been too chickin Wink

Final film choices (even if i don't use all the film)
- 2 rolls velvia 100
- 1 roll provia 100
- 1 roll E100GX

standby - 1 1/2 rolls of kodak ektachrome (maybe elitechrome - i don't have
the box on hand) 400.

thanks again

Thanks for the heads up. I am actually driving to New Brunswick that
weekend and was looking for something to do along the way. Will probably
swing over and check it out

Lisa,

Process as normal. Slides tend to be a bit on the dark side if you rate
them at 'normal' ISO. Dropping this 1/3rd of a stop will lessen that
problem somewhat. Yes, I know, it seems a shame to buy ISO 100 film and
rate it lower, but you should! Manufactures tend to 'pad' the ISO rating
anyway. I regularly shoot Provia 100F at 80 and process normally (myself).
Shadows are a bit more open. Give it a try.

MAYBE....It depends...Rating it at 80 will reduce the saturation, as
well as overexpose the film....If she is metering for the highlights, as
she should with slide film, she may have blown out highlights. It
really depends on how carefully she is metering her scene. It also
depends on what scanner she is using. If she is using a scanner with a
lower Dmax, then she will have problems no matter what slide film she
chooses, just LESS problems with Provia 100F exposed at 80...Velvia and
low Dmax scanners have problems. I have NEVER gotten a great scan of
Velvia, until I got the minolta 5400, now all my scans of slides are
amazing...
