I've been trying to figure out how to shrink a picture to post on a
forum, but can't seem to figure out how. When I try to do it in WIndows
picture and fax viewer, all that happens is that the image is severely
cropped rather than getting the full picture resized/reduced. It has
to be "shrunk" down to 51 or 61k to be able to be posted on this site.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions. AB

You need graphics software, not fax viewing software. I recommend
Irfanview like the other person recommended, but any image editing
software will work. Look for a setting where you can adjust the
compression or quality of a .JPG image.

When you specify a JPEG quality/compression factor when resizing photos,
the file size can vary over a range of almost 5:1, depending on the amount
of detail in the image.

If you want tighter control over the file size, use JpegSizer. It
automatically calculates what quality/compression is needed to achieve your
desired file size. Download free trial at the link below.

Sorry M-M but Rog was right.

You can reduce file size by...

a) Reducing the image size (as you describe)
or
b) Increasing the amount of compression used (the trade off being more
compression = smaller file = poorer quality)

If you're emailing, the maximum attachment can only be around 8mb -
compressing the jpeg is the best bet.

Websites and wallpapers work on pixels - resize first then compress to
obtain a picture between 80 and 250kb. (the less the better) You'll find
very little difference between a compression of 8 and 4.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

That depends very much on the program you are using. In Irfanview
setting a higher compression can result in very ugly pictures. In
Photoshop Elements 3.0, even a low setting gives good quality because
they won't let you go low enough to produce a really BAD photo.
