Totally agree with Michael's comments re the Vectis S1. I've got 22mm
through to 400mm lenses for mine and there isn't much I want to do that the
S1 can't do. I only wish that the 400mm focussed faster and mid-roll change
was quieter - I was using four types of film on one holiday, learned from
that and bought another S1 body.
Only the 400mm lens was bought new, all the other lenses and bodies (I have
two S1 and one S100) were bought second-hand.
Managed to find six rolls of Fuji APS slide film as "end of line bargains"
in a large photo dealer. Please don't tell me the Fuji lab has closed!
I do like using slide film so ...
.... when I saw two Canon IX7 bodies second-hand for £29 each I bought both.
I passed one to a friend ... and then bought a second-hand IX for £59.
I've now acquired several EF lenses so the next step will be to buy a
second-hand EOS 35mm body and then ...
.... I'll be able to use APS print and 35mm slide without carrying two
different systems around.
The only catch is that the S1 lenses are more compact than their Canon
equivalents (because the S1 lenses are specifically for APS format whereas
the Canon lenses are 35mm format) so I've not decided which system to take
on holiday.
So - yes, I'm still using APS and will stay with it for as long as it lasts.
The print quality meets my needs and I very much like the way that exposure
info is printed on the back of each print. I also use the print quantity
option more than I expected.
I'll use 35mm for slides (I'm just waiting to find a suitable body
second-hand .. the 300 and 3000 appeal because they are similar in style to
the IX7).
Here in the UK, APS SLR bodies are not expensive - £29 for IX7 was a good
price (though I saw an IX7 in a nearby city a few days later at £199).
Vectis S1 and S100 with the "shorter" lenses (28-56mm, 22-80mm, 25-150mm)
are not difficult to find but the longer lenses (56-170mm, 80-240mm and
400mm) and the macro are not very common. This is assuming you want to buy
from a store rather than by mail order or online.
Canon IX and IX7 are also not hard to find and, of course, lenses aren't a
problem due to them taking the current EF lenses.
Nikon APS SLR, on the other hand, do seem quite rare. I recall seeing only
2-3 in the past year.
