I have a 10 year old mamiya 645 super, motor drive, prism, several backs,
plus several lenses. What is the best way to sell it?

I'm afraid if I sell it on ebay, lenses may get damaged on the way, plus I
don't have alot of feedbacks so buyers may not bid on such relatively
expensive stuff. Plus, although everything is in perfect condition, how can
I convince the buyers? If I provide a warranty, it may get abused.

I could sell it to a local pro camera store (mamiya dealer), or ask them to
sell it on consignment. This way they can examine the camera and provide a
store warranty, which should be more reassuring for buyers. But the sale may
not get as much exposure as putting it on ebay, and the store would take a
bigger cut than ebay.

What would you do?

Check out the grading system at keh.com, grade your gear and ask keh
for a quote based on that grading. Ask them to give you the price for
each part separately in case you decide not to sell it all to them.
You won't get as much from them as from ebay, but there are fewer
hassles and at least you'll know the bottom line worth of your gear in
case you decide to sell it elsewhere.

I've sold a couple of 35 mm manual focus systems and my wife's Pentax
645 system to them and found that my gradings and their gradings pretty
much matched so if you're not overly optimistic with the grading you
can expect full price from them.

If you package them right they won't.

Then sell some cheaper items until you do. You'll probably find you have all
sorts of things you can sell later so good feedback on ebay is a handy
thing to have, sorta like good credit even if you don't need it right now.

Give them a "No DOA warranty" that's all anyone expects.

You'll be lucky to get 1/4 of what they sell it for.

Sell it on ebay.

Sorry, group, but since noone except myself still provides a real mail
address, these days... :-/

I might be interested in some of your gear. Do send me an email with a
valid return address, please.

OK, you talked me into it.

There is one more question.
How do I figure out the compatiblity between my stuff and newer mamiya
equipments? For example, I'm sure my film backs would work on more than just
the 645S, but how do I find out which ones, so I can list them on my ad?
Same issue with motor winder, prism finder, poloraid back.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Do your research: check ebay over several weeks, if not months, looking at
completed items and how much they sell for. Sell each part separately.
Don't set your opening bid(s) lower than you can possibly bear to part with
the item(s), but based on the going price of the item, be realistic as to
how much you're going to get for it.

As for the Mamiya specific question, try writing Mamiya USA and asking them.
That and search google.

There are basically two generations of Mamiya 645 non-AF cameras: the
early M types, i.e. M645, M645J, M645 1000S and the later Super/Pro
series consisting of the 645 Super, the Pro and the Pro TTL.

The economy model 645E is a bit of a special case.

All lenses fit on all bodies. No exceptions there. The same goes for
practically everything else that's attached to the lens bayonet, e.g.
bellows and extension rings, and the film inserts.

The rest (viewfinders, WLF, magazines) is interchangeable within the
individual generations. So, the backs, winders, grips, magazines,
finders, polabacks etc. that fit your Super can also be used with the
Pro and the Pro TTL but not the earlier M series.

That clear now? Fine. Smile

Other advice, sell each item individually, people won't buy "kits". Start
with the cheaper items and wait for the feedback to come in, then list
another. Also I've learned to start the bidding at $9.95 and use a
-reasonable- reserve. People like to bid even if it's unreasonable amounts.
Once others see that someone else wants it, they figure it must be
something good so they bid. A reserve costs no more than a high starting
bid does as far as ebay fees.Once the reserve is met, many times thats when
the real bidding will start. Place the reserve too high and you'll never
get there much less go past it. Not every item will go for what you want
but some will bring more than you expect. If you have several of the same
items, don't "flood the market" with them. You'll want people to bid
against each other, not to have a choice of items to bid on. I also always
use a reasonable "Buy it now" price and about 50% of the time someone does.

I have 300 positive feedbacks, have sold $1000+ camera's etc so have some
experience dealing with ebay.
