Not sure about the Metz 3xx-x series (check out the Metz site, URL
forgotten so try Google, for data on features), but the 54MZ-3 is a stunning
gun (wait for the MZ-4 if you plan to go digital) with everything you'll
ever need- fully adjustable down to something like 1/128th power, GN of 54m,
and modelling light feature (invaluable to me). The SB80 and 28 are
similarly higly placed, although I don't think the 28 has modelling flash
(invaluable for still life). The 26 is highly thought of too, but i've never
used it. Of course, as you have a non-dedicated SLR at the moment, something
like a Metz 45 would work fine... and with the right model, you can get an
appropriate SCA adaptor with your automatic SLR later for dedicated
wizardry.
Personally, I bought a cheapo Centon (UK camera store brand) that did
almost everything the 54MZ-3 did, but with less power and poor as hell build
quality (screw-in ring doesn't screw down all the way). I got it for
next-to-nothing secondhand, and it works well enough for me.
Summing up... it's a matter of taste. If you can put up with the SB-80
menu system (I hate it), it's a great flash. I love the Metz to death, and
would buy it if I needed that much flash, and would recommend it to anyone
who asked. There are two accessories i'd also recommend for future use (when
you pick up that automatic)- an off camera cord (SC-17? can't remember at
the moment) and some sort of diffuser. I use a Lastolite Micro Apollo
softbox, but then I like to think I can have studio equipment at liliput
size on a shoestring
