I'm thinking of getting a flatbed film scanner and I'm interested in what
others are using. Right now I am looking at:

Epson 2450 or 3200
Microtek ScanMaker 5900 or 6800

Thanks,
Bill

I don't know about the Microteks. The Epson 3200 or 2450 are adequate
for much medium format work. You won't get the same results as you
would from a 4000 ppi film scanner or a drum scan, but you will be able
to make 11 x 14 prints at least and larger if the viewer doesn't get
right up close to the print. (Normal viewing distance is usually
considered to be the diagonal of the print, but some of us insist on
putting are noses right up against the print.)

I had an Epson 2450 and now have a 3200. The 3200 is quite a bit
faster, but there is not a large improvement in the resolution of fine
detail, perhaps 10 percent for my units.

See some examples of resolution for the 2450 at

I'm in the same position. Why are you looking at the ScanMakers over the
Artix's?

I'm using a Polaroid SprintScan 35Plus. Before you tell me I'm in the wrong
group, it's capable of scanning superslides. Most (if not all) of my 645s
get cropped into superslides, as well as all of my 127 exposures
(obviously). Therefore I can use a 35mm scanner for my (almost) MF work. I
believe these units were made by Microtek. Do any of their current scanners
have this feature?

It's a matter of cost. I'm leaning towards the Epson 2450 or 3200 though.

I have a Epson2450, I did some researches before I bought it, and many
people say that 3200 isn't that different from 2450, except the price,
that's why I ends up with a 2450. The quality is acceptable, but the scan
time is very slow(so is the 3200)...... but it's cheap and it scans
35mm/mid/large format... I think I am overall satisfied with it. you may go
to comp.periphs.scanners to get more info.

Anyone like the latest CanoScan - the 9900F?
