Post subject: which film?
Archived from groups: rec>photo>film+labs (more info?)

Hi Everybody,

This is my first post here and i have a question.
I'm an amateur in field of photography and sadly don't have the time to
increase my knowledge of it.
I am going to Tunisia this month and I'm bringing my Minolta 2xi dynax with
me.
I'd like to get advice which colour films should i bring for the trip, brand
and sensitivity wise

Thanks in advance
Vanja

Very much a personal choice, but I would have some 100 400 and maybe some
800 film. This will give you sufficient speeds for daylight to dark with
flash shooting. Overall, in film you get what you pay for, so I recommend
Kodak Portra and Royal types or Fuji types, which ever you can get easily.

You can increase your knowledge of photography by just doing it. Buy
a few different films and try them. No one film is going to be right
for everything. You need to find out what you like.

Suggest Kodachrome 64 for its heat tolerance and biting sharpness.
Tried and true performer. You may want to supplement with Kodachrome
200 for low-light situations.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

True, Matt. But on a once in a lifetime trip, is that the best time to
gamble?

Thanks, I will try to find them here. I expect lot of bright sun and high
contrast scene's. So for daylight 100 is ok?<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

The question we didn't ask is the f-number of your lens. With an f/1.8 or
f/2.8 lens, 100 speed is fine for everything outdoors, and 400 is sufficient
indoors. If you have an f/5.6 or f/8 zoom, the lens picks much less light
and you might want 400 speed even outdoors, for everything except full
sunlight.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Use Kodak Supra or Royal Gold/Royal Supra 400. If you prefer Fuji, use
Superia Xtra 400.

For bright daylight, 100 is quite superb yes.

OK, except for full sunlight, you should stick with higher-speed film (200
and up).<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I'll second that. Kodachrome 64 is reliable under adverse conditions. It
will work well for slides of fully sunlit scenes. With an f/1.8 lens it is
a general-purpose film; at f/5.6, no...<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I agree. That is a slow lens. So film speed must be increased. I
would go for Portra 400 NC or for intense outdoor shots, Portra 400 VC.
I usually use the NC myself. For technical information from Kodak,
