Post subject: Question for those with more experience
Archived from groups: rec>photo>digital>slr-systems (more info?)

I currently own a Sony Mavica CD1000 and have been looking for a higher end
digital to replace it with. I haven't used my 35mm since I bought my Sony so
I if I sound a bit foolish I apologize in advance Wink

I'm trying to get a feel for what's available or if any of it is compatible
with my current equipment.

I have a Pentax ZX50 35mm with a 35-80 mm lens. would this be compatible
with any of the newer digital cameras? I still have lenses for my older
Pentax 35mm also that use a standard K mount, would these be compatible?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Jeff G.

The current *ist-D, and the soon-to-be-released *ist-DS (coming on Nov 20th)
are fully compatible with any KA-or-later Pentax lens (i.e. any Pentax lens
made in the last 20 years), and will even function with older K-mount lenses
(although only in manual exposure mode restricted to using stop-down metering).
Obviously you won't get auto-focus unless you use auto-focus lenses, but as
you have a ZX50 I'd suspect you have mostly FA (autofocus) lenses.

The *ist-DS is expected to sell for somewhere under $1000 including a kit lens
(the FAJ 18-55). As the *ist-DS, like the *ist-D, uses the 16mm x 24mm sensor
(the same sensor as in the Nikon D100) the angle of view of this lens is more
or less the same as that of a 28-80 on a full-frame 35mm camera.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Thanks John, Still not sure what cameras I'm leaning towards but I'm trying
to keep an open mind and my budget around the $1000 dollar mark to start,
accessories can come later and it does help to know that lenses I currently
own can be used if need be. Looks like I have a lot of catching up to do and
a little re-learning of things I have forgotten.

Haven't done much photography for photography's sake in a long time...I miss
taking a road trip and just shooting whatever is inspiring...I'm plan on
fixing that, thanks for helping me out Smile

I don't have any problems with used equipment, actually I picked up my Sony
on Ebay. First I need to decide what I'm after (compare features and such)
then I'll be ready to compare prices and track one down.

You can get a Canon D30, D60, 10D for less than $1k, or a Canon D2000
/ Kodak DCS520 for $500 and less.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
