Get yourself into IRAQ,Afghanistan etc.. some war torn area and start taking
pictures, if you come home alive and with pictures build a portfolio of your
best shots and you will start out in a good footing in the PJ industry.
While your liberal arts collegiate buddies have failed ending up with
broken dreams, working the drivethru you will have the backstage pass into a
tough but rewarding career.
This advice assumes you have the basics down pat (ie an eye for composition
and the technical skills required to operate a camera, SLR or rangefinder)
This stunt will show potential employers that you have the guts to go out
and take risks resourcefulness and the ability to operate under the toughest
situations and still get the story.
It is time to stop wrapping hamburgers in paper and handing out change.
Change your life, take risks. Enter Dantes Inferno and make it home with a
good story. >> Stay informed about: easy way to get a journalism job. |

Yee right you could try and get yourself killed or do it the easy way.
Papers cry out for good human interest stuff. Go out and take pictures and
keep taking them to your LOCAL paper. No you will not get paid. Get known as
a good photographer who can SEE a picture. When a job becomes available you
will be the first choice. Job with a Mag or Major paper ? Forget it there
are thousands of
good guys already working for locals.

It may surprise you but journalist access to anywhere important/exciting
in a war zone is usually controlled by one of the belligerents. They
usually do not allow unaccredited journalists into the war zone. Even
getting "in-country" is often tightly controlled. You show up with a
bag of cameras, somebody will want to know why.
You could try a banana revolution, or middle Africa where the rules are
a bit less stringent... send your photos home however, there's a good
chance you won't make it out.
It is currently the "thing" among some adventure travellers to pay a fee
to have a Teahouse chat with Maoist Revolutionaries in Nepal. So you
could try that route too.

Three problems with sending words and photos from war zones as a newbie
1) Warzones are Dangerous. Bullets can make problems go away.
2) Warzones are Expensive.
3) War's generate phenominal amounts of propaganda and third hand bullshit.
Unless you have a reputation to trade on, or can provide independent
confirmation, you could wind up risking life and limb, eyewitness *the*
story of the decade, and still not have your story printed, since it's only
your word and who are you again?

I take pictures for the adult industry (stock photos etc). I am a closet PJ

#1 Greater risks = greater rewards, the biggest risk takers are the ones who
take home the bacon in the end.
#2 It is more expensive to sit there hoping for the train to stop and give
you a ride to a good career.
#3 The pictures will do the speaking, You are there as an observer capturing
split seconds of action on a piece of plastic coated with silver halide. You
are not there to get a story printed only to gather some good pictures for a
portfolio that will impress.
Like I said before only a few people do well in this industry and the
majority are stuck in a rut taking pictures of the same old folks home story
or about the "yawn" local politics scene for scraps. It is your choice be
another lemming fighting for scraps or break out and do something bigger
with your life.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: easy way to get a journalism job. |

Why am I reminded of those japanese tourists who got out of their car to get
a photo cuddling those wild lions.
Some shit is just darwin in action.

Yes, sitting still =zero
But lying in an unmarked grave also equals zero, and a good torture session
probably dips into the negative values.

Silver Halide? WTF?
Err I mean...
If they arrive more than a day late, no editor listens to pictures of a
stale event.
Editors prefer color, digital and fresh, to b/w stale film.
And if you are anyway near the action, a video camera will capture action
better than silver halide that isnt even used in non warzone newspapers.
PJ's are professionals, do you know how much stuff costs in shit holes?
