Put a lens on it. Inquire if a battery grip/portrait format
grip is available --- they can help a lot.

Steve, it ain't - the skin is plastic, and bounces reasonably well,
inside the front skeleton is magnesium alloy. It has no back underframe,
unlike the D300, but that has no effect on the critical tolerances and
strength of the camera.
Your Contax Aria feels like cheap plastic if you try a Contax ST instead
- metal and don't you know it!
You will not find any DSLR which feels much different to the A700 unless
you buy something which is heavier and more solid because it's huge and
expensive. The Nikon D300 is probably as good as you get for heft and
reassurance, but in fact, it is no more 'solid' than an A700, 5D, 40D or
whatever. They are all skinned in plastic because it does the job very well.

There you go again with the BS "weasel words" touted as gospel from the
pulpit with sweeping generalizations.
Let's see your specific testing which proves: "that has no effect on the
critical tolerances and
strength of the camera"
and: "in fact, it is no more 'solid' than an A700, 5D, 40D or
whatever."
Me thinks your well known agenda against heft and solidity influences your
pronouncements (or "literary license", if you prefer) more than facts.
You are free to PROVE me wrong, of course.

I don't doubt that the cameras, under their skins, are tight, but having
the cameras in hand I liked the Nikon over the Canon and Sony. The Canon
just felt like plastic, while the Nikon had a feel I more preferred. For
the price-point I would figure that the cameras were equal in build and
solidity. Since the D300 is less expensive than the 5D I would have
expected my impressions to be reversed.
I still expect to head the Canon route, but the Nikon made a good
impression.
