I was chatting with my new neighbor over snow shovels this morning. He's a
professional photographer and is selling out his Sinar LF system (three or
four lenses, dozens of 4x5 film holders, w/a bellows, F2 body... and
more...) for dirt cheap. Really cheap. Why? To keep up with the digital
flow/progress that has become necessary to make a good living in this area.
(He does make a good living, too.)

On the one hand, there's the bargain of the year and on the other a sinking
feeling in my stomach I can't identify. Maybe it's liberation. Dunno.

Liberation in the sense of Casal's hand injury?

The story about Pablo Casals (great 20th century cellist for those who don't
know) has him injuring one of his hands while hiking. His companions were
horrified, but Casals supposedly said "Thank God--now I don't have to practice
any more!".

As a total non-sequitir, I offer these R. Crumb
classics for your amusement and/or consolation.

<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.terrapinphoto.com/homegrown_funnies.jpg" target="_blank">http://www.terrapinphoto.com/homegrown_funnies.jpg</a>
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.terrapinphoto.com/desperate_character.jpg" target="_blank">http://www.terrapinphoto.com/desperate_character.jpg</a>

I dunno, something about the recent threads made
me go looking for these old rags. These two are
the front and rear cover, respectively, of a
single issue from around 1970.

Lots of snow on the ground here in Boston, but
it's 45 degrees out, clear blue sky, and feeling
like spring. Already been out for a walk.

Ah, yes, the great Crumb. Me, I'm still trying to rise above the level of his
Flakey Foont ...

By the way, if you haven't seen it, you should get ahold of a copy of Terry
Zwigoff's "Crumb" and see it. Captivating docmentary about the man and his
extraordinary family.

Why I play with cameras instead of the clarinet:

Surely you've heard the one about the twelve
inch pianist?

Looks a little thick at the end there--did you lose it in a tragic
sledgehammer accident?

Nah, just pressing down hard on
the scanner glass, I think.

Do you know what a jointer is?

Damned if I know. My dad was a
connoisseur of cheap tools. I was
about 15 at the time.

A commercial photog has to deal with the unreal expectations of his
clients...wait too long to make a decision, then expect the photog to
make up the lost time with fast photo shoots and no waiting for film to
be processed by a lab, and instant digital photo transmission to the
publisher to meet the printing deadline. Also, the digital composition
and photo alteration. Newer digital cameras based on monorail camera
design but with digital backs of reasonable size and cost (compared
with past LV digital backs) become essential to the pro commercial
photog.

A enthusiast photog does not have to deal with the quick turnaround,
instant digital data transmission to printers, etc. So the benefits of
LF, like ability to use swing and tilt and other LF movements to
control the photo, can be had at a VERY affordable price. Jump on the
opportunity to buy this stuff at a bargain basement price if you value
what LF can do, which is far beyond the size of the image!
