With many electronics, that use rechargeable batteries, I don't think twice
about getting an after market battery. Is that something to avoid with this
camera?

I bought a noname brand battery for my Minolta A1, it works but doesn't
hold a charge like the original battery does, later I bought a 350D and
picked up 2 spare batteries from ebay, while these batteries were a
third of the price of the ones in the shop they were still original
Canon batteries, they hold the charge and last just as long as the one
that came with the camera.
