Post subject: common names for small parts
Archived from groups: rec>photo>equipment>large-format (more info?)

I recently acquired a Meridian 45B which I hope to clean and restore. In
doing the restoration, I think that some of the parts may need to be
replaced. For example, the knobs that lock the front tilt do not always
hold. The fix for this may (and probably is) as simple as replacing a
washer, but might require replacing the entire knob mechanism. Another
problem is that the back adjustments do not always lock down tight. Again, I
think this is due to wear on some of the parts.

I know where to find parts (Berg, Small Parts, etc.) - my problem is one of
nomenclature; particularly for things that are "common" like knobs. For
example, is there a more common name for the types of knobs used for the
tilt and rise locking mechanism. Even if the original part was unique to
this camera, I would think it could easly be replaced with a standard
art - I just don't know where to look for it in the suppliers catalog.
Another example is the back locking mechanism (a ball, pin and knob
arrangement) - it looks pretty standard, but I have no idea what its name
is.

Once I know the names, and take some measurements of the existing parts, I
should be able to easly find the parts I need. Fortunately none of more
unique parts need to be replaced.

Othere than catalogs, is there a good guide to small parts - something that
talks about nomenclature and measurements?

thanks,
Scott

Hi Scott,

Sorry, I can't help you the names of parts (I feel the same frustration
when trying to explain a piece of a camera; there should be a visual
lexicon of camera parts) but I would appreciate it if you could send me the
references for "Berg" and "Small Parts". If you get any other info, could
you pass it along; I think that there are a lot of us who feel the same
way. Thanks.

Regards,
Bogdan
