couldn't say without a lot more information, namely the model number
and the condition it's in, as well as any included accessories, etc.

BTW, there's no such thing as a Canon A1 flash gun.

There were speedlight strobes that work in dedicated mode with the A1
camera body.

The 199A was the hotshoe model. I can't remember off hand which one
of the bracket mount flashes was designed for the A1, it was either
the 533G or the 577G.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

That still doesn't tell us anything.

The 199A was dedicated to the A1
The 188A was dedicated to the AE1 Program.
Other models were dedicated to other camera bodies.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

its a 188a that why it was no better than my £15 manual miranda?

The 188A was designed primarily for the AE-1 Program, but it will work
with other models in AE flash mode.

The 199A, 577G and 533G are specifically designed for the A-1 body.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
