Post subject: Should I buy a new camera body or keep on using my Yashica F
Archived from groups: rec>photo>moderated (more info?)

Three years ago I bought my first reflex: a second-hand Yashica FX-3
with a Yashica 50mm f/2 lens.
Now a would like to buy new lenses, for example a 24mm wide-angle and
a zoom, or something like that.
So my question is: is it convenient to me to buy new lenses for a
twenty years old camera body or would it be better to me to buy a new
camera body?
I would like to learn photography, develop my films, etc.
What is your opinion in this regard?
Thank you in advance for your help

I've read where Contax lenses will work with Yashica's. Take a look
at the used offererings at:

I've noticed they have several series of Contax lenses, I'm not sure
exactly which one's work with Yashica.

Unless there is something wrong with your camera, I wouldn't replace
it with a "new" camera. You're already comfortable with that camera,
so it'd be more logical to augment your current setup. I've looked at
a number of these "new" cameras that have come out in the last 10
years. I'm not impressed with any of them. They don't look, feel or
respond like a "camera" in my opinion. Too much automation and all
the controls are multi-function, rather than having a seperate knob,
dial, button, or switch for each function like older SLR's.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

As for learning B&W photography, check out local camera club, or often
local colleges offer both credit and non-credit photography courses,
which usually have B&W darkroom work as part. Have a friend walk you
through it, and do some reading on your own is also good. You don't
need much in the way of facilities, and there is lots of used
equipment -- enlarger, etc., on e-bay. B&H have nice "starter" kits as
well. If you are in a major metropolitan area with good camera shots,
used equipment that you can actually place your hands on is often
available. Great hobby -- I've been at it off and on for 1/2 a
century.
