Don't buy from USAphotonation.com. It is a bait and switch operation.
In my case they advertised a new Nikon 8080 on their website at an
unbeatable low price. So, I ordered it on their website, along with
some accessories. Soon after I got a phone call from their salesmen
saying he needed my security code. After I gave it to him, he lied and
mislead me into changing or adding to the accessories (I even hung up
on him and he called back immediately). Moreover, I am partially deaf
and had difficulty understanding some of what he said (this is why I
buy online).

When the goods arrived, they did not include a $299 flashcard I
ordered. Moreover, I soon found out that most of the accessories I had
bought, thanks to the salesmen, did not fit my camera, or were
otherwise undesirable.

So, I sent the company an email about the missing flashcard, and
received a response saying I should contact them by phone (the only
company on the internet that has responded in this way to an email).
Explaining that I was hard of hearing, and realizing the trouble I had
before with a salesmen, I sent them an additional email explaining
this and noting also that I wanted to return most of the accessories.
No response. Sent a warning. No response. Sent a final email, just to
be sure. No response.

In the meantime, in spite of my hearing difficulty, I finally tried to
call them, but the phone was either busy, or when I got through, I got
a message to leave a message, which I did. No return call.

I have ended up without a $300 flash card I ordered and about $600
worth of useless or undesirable accessories.

So, I have contested their credit card charge with my bank.

Those of us that research companies before we buy from them already knew about
this outfit, if you had done even a little checking you would have known about
them too. Call your credit card company and dispute the charges.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

As this may be of general interest rather than ZLR-specific please post it

Maybe he felt that only ZLR owners, or at least people who thought
that the ZLR group was a cool idea were likely to be taken in by such
a scam?

Unlikely, as it was posted to other groups as well.

Kind of low. If you haven't already you should add your story there.

There was no address at resellerratings. So I did a whois on the domain
name. I find a Brooklyn area phone number, but no address. Also no address
at their web site. (Maybe they don't want me taking their picture!) A
reverse lookup on the web site local phone number produces:

Radio Active
164-15 Jamaica Ave.
Jamaica, NY 11432

This is just a little ways from Brooklyn. Note the early closing on Friday
and being closed on Saturday.

Hmm... Well, I'll take Verizon's Yellow Pages reverse lookup over whatever
google does. Anyway. I just spent three hours bicycling out there to get a
picture of Radio Active. Give me a couple hours and I'll get it on the web.

Here's a web page with the phone number:
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.pricescan.com/vendors/radioactivedeals.asp" target="_blank">http://www.pricescan.com/vendors/radioactivedeals.asp</a>

But then going to their site at:
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.radioactivedeals.com/contact.asp" target="_blank">http://www.radioactivedeals.com/contact.asp</a>
I find a different 718 phone number, but the same fax number that is on the
USAphotonation.com site.

Then a whois on radioactivedeals.com finds this same phone number. And the
address I just took a picture of.

Well, I guess I could've called (718) 526-8080 before I posted earlier,
but I rang it just now and the menu options are definitely that of
radioactivedeals.com. So you're listing seems more appropriate than
Google's - unless R. Tomers is surreptitiously living in the attic. Smile

Okay. It wasn't all that cold today, so I bicycled out for a picture. The
next day I could go, Wednesday, is forecast to be very cold. Dusk was
setting in when I got there, but I did get there in time. You can see a lot
of shoppers out for Christmas shopping!

Guys,

This isn't ZLR-specific, and would be of interest to a wide audience.
More people would see this thread if it were in rec.photo.digital.

Cheers,
David

Is it your intention to have a news group with no postings? Are you
the self appointed moderator of an unmoderated group? About half the
threads in this group contain a post by you objecting to the posts of
others. While I agree that some postings should in fact be questioned,
if you continue to haze people because their posts don't perfectly meet
your interpretation of the charter's requirements, you'll soon have one
of those groups that have a post every two weeks or so until they die
altogether. With thousands of alternatives out there, folks really
don't need a group with it's own built in net nanny anymore than they
need the ones with the flame artists and junk peddlers. Do as you
wish, but it's my opinion that you're being more harmful than helpful.

Whether something deserves or can get a wider audience isn't my point.
Nor is it my point that a certain camera isn't on topic, etc. Telling
people that their posts aren't welcome is something that should be done
as infrequently as possible if you want to build a well used and useful
newsgroup. Some folks get offended and leave, never to return. Others
may well respond defensively and escalate to flaming, which can also
lose a contributor via another route. My point is that censorship will
result in responses you may not want and it should be applied very
judiciously to avoid just that.

As this is a new newsgroup, setting the tone is quite important. David is
correct in that this NG is zlr specific and that the intent of the OP is best
given via the more general rpd.

Not at all. This NG has been growing slowly and steadilly since its inception
early last month. It is good to see the on-topic stuff and good to encourage
on-topic posting. In the case fo the ZLR group w/o having to wade through the
morass that rpd has become.

I don't concur. There are a few well intentioned people who will nudge things
along the right way without becominig netcops. And it is good if occasionally
irritating. Much less irritating than an out of control NG.

Cheers,
Alan
