It's not missing, it simply was never on it in the first place. But it takes
great shots so you won't need it anyway

Because the D300 can and the D40x also lacks multi exposure.
All together it's a great camera, but it's limited in technical extra's.

And no: you don't need it. Do you even have a clue what bracketing is? It's
nothing more then automating the process of under and /or overexposing a few
pictures. you can easily do that by hand also.

Bracketed exposures are bracketed exposures.

Not if you want the images taken close together in time, for instance,
within the same second or two. >> Stay informed about: No auto-bracketing on Nikon D40X? |

Isn't the moon illuminated with approximately constant light, so that once
the correct exposure is ascertained, it can be used repeatedly? But
perhaps you want to try some HDR? There are programs which can align
images, but I've not used them myself.
Cheers,

Exactly the point I was trying to make.
My D300 does have auto bracketing. But when I wanted to do some experiment,
I turned out that it doesn't work together with multiple exposure. So if I
want to fool around within that, I still have to "bracket" it myself. Big
deal!
