I took my Sony Cybershot PSC-10 to Las Vegas and one day all my relatives
decided to go swimming at Ceasar's huge wading pool. I went right in the
water with my Cybershot and got some nice photos. I got some little
splashes on the camera and it still performed admirably. I know it's
foolish to take a $450 camera into the water but I wanted to get photos of
my son playing. I've also taken photos in the rain (misty or drizzle, not a
downpour). It still worked well up until recently when it developed
unrelated mechanical problems.
However, if I were to be near water all the time, you can get a waterproof
housing for certain digital cameras. I almost dunked my camera a few months
later when I was taking more photos while standing in a pool. I used to
work in a camera shop and I saw a few 35 mm SLR's that were ruined by being
exposed to beach air. Water will get into everything if you leave it
exposed long enough.
