I have one like below, very pleased, The only complaint is the time
required to shift the collumn from vertical to horizontal (unscrew,
screw...) but at least it has that possibility which many tripods do not
have. Combine it with a 322RC2 head and you will not be dissapointed. It's
not something to take on a vacation, but it is very sturdy.

I really got lucky when the sports photographer for the local paper in
my city decided to dump his old equipment.
I bought the professional series Manfrotto 055B tripod and Manfrotto
134 monopod for ten bucks each in a garage sale. Later that week, I
found the Manfrotto 488RC2 ball head for forty bucks in a local
buysell forum.
The ByThom web page is correct. I must have bought at least half a
dozen other tripods and monopods before finally getting something that
works for me, especially with the 80-200mm f2.8 lens. It is fairly
heavy.

I thought that I would share an organization tip. I save the thick,
bright pink rubber bands from when I buy brocolli at the local
supermarket. These rubber bands are used to hold the three legs of my
tripod in place while in transport, as well as holding all wires and
cabling in nice tight bundles. I've tried the velcro fasteners but
the bright pink rubber bands seem to be the easier, more natural way
to go. They are also very easy to see in darker situations. Keep
eating your brocolli and you will never run out.

That's a good move - garage sale, etc. Not much on eBay right now. I
think used tripods offered for resale are few and far between, especially
the good ones. They have a long duty life. I've never even been tempted
to upgrade my old film tripods to new digital tripods. ~Ray >> Stay informed about: Tripod question |

My supermarket uses blue rubber bands for the brocolli. Will they work? >> Stay informed about: Tripod question |

"Broccoli" is an excellent vegetable-stir fry salads etc. Personally I
like the small bungie cords, a little more durable and easier to
unfasten in a hurry. Available at select Home Improvement centers near
you.
Standard disclaimer:
Does require a little a little looking....well worth the time.
