I am planning a trip to Colorado in August. Usually, I take my 35mm
equipment with me; however, I would like to take my 4x5 with me this time.
I must admit that I am a bit paranoid about letting the people at the
airport throw my equipment around. The case that I have is too big to use
as a carry-on. I usually reserve the view camera for car trips, where I
have total control. This is not a field camera, it is a Sinar F so it is
not quite as compact.

Anyone have any suggestions? I guess that I could compress the the camera,
put it into a backpack and pack the other items, like film, holders,
monorail, etc. into a piece of luggage and be on my merry way.

Regards,

Paul

I don't know how the my old NG buddy ever put up with it - Halliburton
cases with big 'Film' and 'National Geographic' stickers on them. Never
lost a thing.

You could consider FedExing them to a pickup and back, but for all we know
they might be on the same plane with you, handled by the same people!<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

You could sent it by mail to your destination.

You could see about renting a camera locally,
when I went to New Mexico awhile back I
rented a tripod from Camera & Darkroom in Albuquerque.

I've flown in and out of denver a couple of times with my 4x5 and never
had any problems. I wrap it in bubble wrap, then in a bath towel and pad
it with as much stuff as I can in the middle of a large case (using my
clothes as padding).

Then i hand carry lenses, film, lightmeter.

I'm imagine you'd be best to separate the camera from the rail and pad
them separately.

The only airline i've ever seen badly mistreat luggage is the irish budget
carrier ryanair. I have never seen my cases looking so sorry.

I have been advised to never label your luggage as 'fragile' since it's
just asking to be dropped from a 747.

There was a story that went around in the '70s about a pro that did a lot of
traveling and got tired of the baggage monkeys throwing around his
equipment. Supposedly, he made a stencil and spray painted on the side of
his Halliburtons: "Property of County Coroner's Office - Fragile: Human
Remains". I was told this story by a camera salesman when I was submitting a
Sonnar 250mm for a fair market value estimate. Why? Because Southwest
Airlines had just bounced open one of my locked Halliburtons and the lens
barrel was dented. The baggage manager said that he groaned when he saw the
case going around the turnstile and muttered 'There goes some of my
retirement funds." Southwest reimbursed me in full. I was so impressed that
I have accumulated a pretty nice chunk of shares in the company. Since then,
there has been a $800 limit per bag, unless you declare, then they won't
cover it at all. Since 9/11 I haven't flown with any pro gear so I don't
know what the situation is these days.

Yeah, they are pretty suspicious these days and I don't know if I want to
put up with the hassle. That's all I need is to seperate the camera and the
monorail. They would X-ray the luggage, see some metal cylindrical object,
hold the plane for 2 hours while they checked it out and then quiz me ad
nauseum! Smile

Hmm, maybe I'll just take the 35mm with me!

I will be bringing my Kodak DC280 digital and 35 Pentax MX with a Hoya
200mm on my upcoming trip to AZ. Anyone know where I can find film for a
Kodak Brownie circa WWII?

I will be bringing my LF to Wales and Australia.

Try J & C Photo (http://www.jandcphotography.com/) for all oddball film sizes.

Where in AZ? I used to live there (Tucson, 8 years, Flagstaff, 11 years).

If nearby, check out Oak Creek Canyon & "red rocks" (Sedona and north, Hwy.
89). Not as spectacular, perhaps, but as or more beautiful than the Grand Canyon.

Thanks David.

I'll be a wee bit north of Tucson. I have seen many photos of Oak Creek
and Sedona. Once I am there on a permanent basis, the rest of the state
will be my oyster Wink
