Hi,

I have just bought a Hasselblad 500c (only the body, nor film magazine
nor lens) I will buy them as soon as I get the money to Smile Anyway, is
there a way to test if the unit is working properly or can I break
something if I push the shutter without lens and magazine? I know that
the shutter has to be engaged to put a lens on it and I will rent a
lens and a magazine to see how it delivers, but I would want to know
if I can make this first-time test only using the body.

I also would appreciate if you can tell me what I have to look for to
detect malfunctions and how can I know if my camera is a 500c or a
500c with possibility of changing the ground glass.

Thanks a lot for your help and regards,

Oscar, new to Hassie world

Click away with or without a lens or magazine. To change screens it
will need to be a 500C/M.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

The most failure-prone item is the lens and shutter inside it. Very
little info can be had by 'testing' the box. All you can see is
whether the mirror is broken.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

There is a lot of usefull info on: <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://medfmt.8k.com/mf/hassybuy.html." target="_blank">http://medfmt.8k.com/mf/hassybuy.html.</a>

Basically, the things you can test is the rear auxillary shutter and the
mirror. The mirror should swing up promptly, and not droop at a corner, but
lie flat against the "roof" of camera. The doors of the shutter should open
fully, and snap shut the moment you take your finger off the release button.
You can test the prerelease (button below wind crank/knob; push up) too: the
mirror should go up and the shutter doors open, and stay that way until you
complete the cycle by pressing the release button. It more than likely will
work fine.

The serial number of Hasselblad cameras and film magazines will tel you the
age. The serial number comtains a two letter code (usually preceding the
numbers, though this was changed not long ago), which translate to the year
the thing was built using the key "VHPICTURES". "V" = 1, "H" = 2, etc. For
instance, a camera with "CE" in the serial number is from: "C" = 5 "E" = 9,
i.e. (19)59.
They started using this code in 1950, so any two letter code below "50"/"CS"
would indicate it was made in this century, not the last.

The viewing screen is interchangeable in cameras having a serial number
starting at UV106701 (1971). You can tell by looking at the screen: in
cameras that have interchangeable screens there are two retaining clips on
left and right sides that hold the screen in place.
