Thanks to all those who have offered sound advice over the last few weeks.
I am adding to my current minolta system next week, the KM 7D with 18-70mm
lens and UV filter plus the vertical battery grip and a 1gig 40X CF card to
start with, just in time to cash in the $300 rebate......if they cough up
that is! Should do me for a while and stop the missus from whinging about
me wanting anything else!!
cheers and thanks, this is a great ng.

Not only did KM honor my 7D rebate, Lexar honored theirs too.

Is there a good handy reference for lens comparisons in general?

Well, most reviews of the 5D find the images soft, as do my own
(nonscientific) tests. All of these are with the 18-70mm lens, and AFAIK the
sensor in the 5D is the same as that of the 7D, which is generally well
received. Therefore it looks like the lens is the limiting factor.
The 24-120mm lens seems really good from what i've tried of it, BTW.

Ok. I will check out the prices of the other lens but I am on a strict
budget and may not be able to afford it just yet. Most of what I will take
with the 7D will be wildlife and macro shots and for landscapes I am
sticking to fine grained professional film as I think, from what I have been
told thus far, the quality is better with film than with only
6.1MP.....unless you've heard or know differently??
What about simply sharpening the pics anyway if they are a little soft??
Most reviews seem to advise upping the sharpening level a notch or two on
the 7D, but you might be right and it could all be in the lens.
cheers

Fair enough, will delay my purchase of the lens and put up with no lower end
focal length zoom for now.

Yeah, I know that but thought that this minolta lens was supposed to be made
specially for their digital SLRs' and would be better than your average
lens, not to mention that they make special mention that there is an
aspherical element or something in it to lower aberrations. Oh well, you
can't believe everything you read, can you? Surely most things minolta
would be good quality???!!! I guess the price says it all, at half the cost
of say, a Tokina or Sigma lens, what can you expect. >> Stay informed about: Taking the digital plunge, finally |

Rebate in Aussie dollars. would be nicer if it was US!
Well, at least they ought to pay up. Bought a Philips shaver that offered a
rebate and haven't seen it even after complaining. >> Stay informed about: Taking the digital plunge, finally |
