I currently have a Panasonic DMC-FZ7 but I would really like a nice
compact lightweight camera that shoots RAW

Any recommendations?

All price ranges, Features(speed!) over cost!

Ok Thanks Everyone....
I've been scooting around dpreview for a few days and couldn't decide
what would be best

I've looked at

Leica D-LUX 3 / Panasonic DMC-LX2 (since it's basically the same apart
from the processing?)
Sigma DP1
Ricoh GR Digital II
Ricoh Caplio GX100

I'd like some optical zoom, lens threads for lenses/filters I bought
for FZ7 and a remote for use with PC would be cool too...

Anyone used these? how are they for taking picture in low light or at
night with a longer exposure, or am I hoping for too much?

I bought a different compact/subcompact camera every six months or so
for two or more years (time flies!) until I got the Panasonic LX1. It
does excellent work in nearly every aspect of its use. I'm not sure
the LX2 is a step up, but maybe. Go to Flickr.com and search
everyone's photos for "LX2" and they will serve up 39,000+ examples
and/or modifying tricks.

<DISCLAIMER> I have never done this </DISCLAIMER>

Google "CHDK" - All cameras take raw images. You may find that you can
make several cameras bypass the JPG step and output the original raw image.

Panasonic DMC-FZ8, the replacement for your DMC-FZ7. Many other
improvements in addition to RAW output.

Panasonic FZ8, perhaps?

If you like Panasonics check out the FZ series. In raw at ISO 100 image
quality is actually pretty good for printing up to 8.5x11. If you only view
your images on a computer monitor then sensor size hardly matters any more.

Actually very good up to 11x14,
and pretty good up to 16x20,
even with JPEG,
depending of viewing distance.

The secret to good JPEG results with the FZ8 is turning in camera Noise
Reduction, Contrast, and Sharpening down to Low, and using post
processing as may be needed.

With RAW you lose the benefits of in camera lens corrections.

From my prior posts to r.p.d

| Assuming that the image has been taken with a good lens, for printing
| figure at least 130 PPI (pixels per inch) for acceptable results (at
| normal viewing distances), and up to 230 PPI for excellent results.
| With current technology, anything more than 300 PPI is pretty much
| wasted.
| 4x6 5x7 8x10 11x14 16x20 20x30
| ------ ------ ------ ------ ------ ------
| Acceptable: 0.4MP 0.6MP 1.4MP 2.6MP 5 MP 10 MP
| Very good: 0.8MP 1.1MP 2.6MP 5 MP 10 MP 19 MP
| Excellent: 1.3MP 1.9MP 4 MP 8 MP 16 MP 32 MP
| Best: 2.2MP 3.2MP 7 MP 14 MP 28 MP 54 MP
|
| Note that there is much more to the quality of digicam images than
| the raw pixel count. The quality of the lens is an important item
| that is often overlooked -- I'd usually go for 3-4 MP taken with a
| high-quality lens over 5+ MP taken with an inexpensive consumer lens.

>If you only view
>your images on a computer monitor then sensor size hardly matters any more.

True -- *if* the lens is good.

If no-one else bothers to suggest this, have a look at the "Buying
Guide: Digital Cameras Features Search" page at Digital Photography
Review and select "RAW" in the "uncompressed format" option and
"compact" in the "format" option:
<http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/compare.asp>
It woulod be a good idea to have more search criteria, as using only the
above returns too many for them all the results to be displayed.
If you use "ultra compact" in the "format" option instead, then only one
camera is the result.
It may or may not be what you're looking for.

The Canon G9 and the Panasonic LX2 come to mind as possibilities.

Limiting to <$300 shows only four.

Some of the best have dark frame subtraction, which can make for
excellent long exposures.
