Received a Sigma DG lens from a large mail-order house today, and shot off
75 photos at various focal lengths. The photos inside 10' were sharp.
Photos shot at 200mm-300mm were mostly out of focus using a tripod or hand
held. At those distances the lens seemed not to find a focus point, even
though I was using center point focusing. The mail-order house agreed to
replace the lens or refund the $$, but with a 15% restocking fee. I opted
for a replacement. I am hoping this is not a common problem with this lens
(Sigma 28-300mm DG), as I have had good success kit lenses (75-300mm III)
with Canon.

28-300 is a large range and this lens is cheap, so it's not surprising
it's not that great at the long end, which is where wide range zooms
tend to be weakest. plus, sigma has poor quality control, so it could
just be a dud.

it reports f/5.6 to the camera so that the autofocus continues to work.
however, since it really is f/6.3, it may still have trouble.

i don't know if that affects the exif data or not. it might just say
that f/5.6 is the maximum and still report the correct aperture when
the photo is taken (which would be set on the camera).

Not so good on the long end.

The writer does not say if the lens can be manually focused or if the
problem occurs in bright sunlight. If it can be manually focused the problem
is likely due to not enough light reaching the autofocus sensor because of
the maximum aperture being too small.
I had two Nikon 55-200s that could not find focus regardless of focal length
or lighting conditions, hence all Nikon lenses are sh*t? Well that
particular one is and one of the worst lenses I have ever seen regardless of
manufacturer.
The 28-200/300 category, as a whole, regardless of manufacturer (including
Nikon) are not very good designs anyway.
The digital only 18-200s are much better performers as a whole, including
the insanely overpriced Nikon 18-200 (call me crazy, I own one) but should
not be confused with high grade optics.

Bend over, grab your ankles, and get the OEM. Sigma markets to amateurs
who are too cheap to buy OEM.
