phil should know better, and i'm inclined to think that may just be a
typo because he correctly explains the situation in detail on the next
page:
<http://www.dpreview.com/previews/nikond300/page3.asp>
It has four times the number of dots than the 230,000 unit used on the
D2X and other such cameras. For clarity, the words pixels and dots are
interchanged almost randomly in specification sheets but strictly
speaking we should talk of dots (these being red, green or blue
sub-pixels) when referring to the figures quoted by manufacturers. The
D300's LCD has 921,600 dots, 1920 columns by 480 rows, the dots are a
third thinner than they are high and so each group of three dots
(sub-pixels) make up one full color pixel. >> Stay informed about: New Sigma Turd |

that's true, but contrary to sigma advertising materials, the signals
are *not* rgb at every pixel. the sensor measures three overlapping
samples across the spectrum (look at the patents or white papers) which
is then converted into rgb.

bayer sensors divide up the pixels into 50% green, 25% red and 25%
blue. all pixels are used, and a 10mp sensor has 10 million sampling
locations, resulting in a 10 mp image.

nope. there are only 4.65 million spatial sampling locations and sigma
is inflating the count by three.

agreed. >> Stay informed about: New Sigma Turd |

Doesn't it take four dots?

Nikon did with the D1X. They said it was X megapixels (5?) but this was
atcually after interpolating one of the dimesions. Before the
interpolation it was 4 point somrthing megapixels, I believe.

<http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond1x/>
The D1X's pixel grid layout is rectangular rather than square (though
still uses the Bayer GRGB colour filter array), in camera processing
turns the 4028 x 1324 raw pixels (5.33 megapixel) into a 3008 x 1960
pixel image (5.9 megapixel). While it's clear that some interpolation
is being carried out in the vertical direction (to get from 1324 rows
to 1960 rows) there is also compression in the horizontal direction
(reducing from 4028 to 3008 columns), this compression is used to add
detail to the vertical data. Nikon argue that because the input and
output resolution are almost identical no image degradation will be
visible. Something we'll be able to test later in this review... >> Stay informed about: New Sigma Turd |

No. A Bayer sensor uses quad arrangements of four primary filters,
RGBG, but a display device, monitor, TV, etc, uses three, RGB. I
believe the Foveon has three layers, sensitive to blue green and red in
that order.

Yes and no. I had an Olympus XA that took remarkable pictures. They
probably weren't as good as my Canon A-1, but they were still excellent.

How good is the lens? Most of the cell phone images I have seen so far
are pretty bad. That doesn't mean they won't get better, just that they
aren't there yet. Also, the Mp doesn't matter that much. My daughter
has a 2Mp camera that takes excellent images as long as you don't try to
enlarge them too much. I have been very happy with a 6Mp DSLR, but I
have good lenses to go with it, and I don't try to go bigger than 12x18.

I have 16x20s from my 6.3MP and plan to do some 20x24s in the near
future. >> Stay informed about: New Sigma Turd |
