It's NOT portable in the least sense. Given that, a good DSLR makes
far more sense.

NOT portable? If you remove the optional lens hood and optical
viewfinder shown in the link the DP-1 is ever so slightly larger than
an Olympus XA, the most portable camera I own.

The DP-1 may have its problems, but size isn't one of them.

How can someone post so many inane opinions about cameras they have never
seen, smell, touched or tasted let alone used?

What little credibility you may have just continues to erode.

What can I say about the DP-1

Pros
====
Wide-ish lens.
Quiter operation.
A bit smaller than an SLR with a 28mm equ. Lens.
A bit lighter than an SLR with a 28mm equ. Lens.

Cons
====
Foven sensor.
Slow lens.
No internal view finder.

What could make it worse?

I'll revise that. The initial pictures I saw (they seem to be hard to
come by, unlike images FROM the camera??) made it look overly large,
but subsequent to that I've seen another image and I know its size so
it's pocketable.

Dropping it on the floor.
Scratching the lens.
Submerging it in salt water.
Feeding mains power top the battery contacts.
Masking the sensor to only have 1x1.5mm active area.

Sheesh, no imagination any more?

Plus, it wouldn't give you goofy colors and jaggies where there should
be none. It might even keep working for a few years too.

fixed focal length lens with digital zoom
absurdly high price ($999)

The fixed wide-ish focal length leading to a lower weight is a pro. The
digital zoom is unnecessary, and if not used makes no difference to the
performance (although it probably lets them charge more). The price of
$999 is ludicrous, an SLR with a wide lens can be purchased for about
that. However, I still like pro ideas, if it was a bit wider, had a
decent sensor, and was a lot less expensive I would consider it for
walking about town when I do not want to carry the SLR, but would like
better performance than the compact.

cnet stated it was $999, but apparently that was the list price. as of
today, amazon is selling it for $799 (oddly, it was $750 earlier in the
day). if you want the viewfinder, it's $150 more.

Apparently you can pre-order on amazon for $799. Wait a few months
after intro and you'll probably find it for $599 or less.

Still, at $799 it's too high and $150 for a viewfinder?
