Will my camera be able to write pictures faster to a fast SD card or
is the limiting factor the camera?

A sales guy to me the advertised write speeds are for transferring to
a computer.

It entirely depends on your camera choice.

While there isn't a hope in hell that a low cost P&S camera will get
close to the speeds of an SD card, big, 30MPix dSLRs can push the cheaper
cards to their limit.

Depends on the camera. Some of them are the bottleneck, others can indeed
use faster cards. Check manuacturer specs.

Actually my 10MP D-SLR pushes my Sandisk Ultra 2Gb to its limts in
continuous shooting, my 2Gb Extreme 3 is not pushed at all. This when
writing 16Mb RAW files.
