I just bought the Nikon D80 and I'm trying to decide what type of memory
card(s) to buy.
I have a desktop PC that I use a USB ported external 5-in-1 card reader
that supports SD and SDHC (according to the specs). I know for sure
that it works fine with SD.
However, my laptop's built-in 5-in-1 reader supports only SD.
I probably will use the laptop more frequently for my photo-editing.
I'd like to get a 4Gig card. Do they come in SD? (I've only found 4G
in SDHC so far.)
If not, I guess that I can get another external SDHC-compatible reader
for the laptop, or swap out the one that I have connected to my desktop.
Am I better off going with two 2G SD's or 1 4G SDHC and getting a second
external reader for the laptop? (I'm not sure whether there are any
other things to consider such as relative reliability between the 2
formats, etc.)
Thanks! >> Stay informed about: SD or SDHC? |

BRH,
Unless cost is a major consideration, I would go for the 2GB SDs for
maximum all-round comaptibility. At the price they are today, I got 4 so
I would expect to cover a week's trip with no external storage. Movies or
RAW might alter requirements.
Cheers,

Some of the Sandisk SDHC cards come with a mini SDHC card reader.
Personally I have several 2 Gig SD cards but find that I rarely use the
second card as I clear of the pictures as soon as I can and get them onto my
PC for archiving.
I also have a portable drive with card readers built in that I can copy the
cards off to and that is 40Gb so I just use that for longer trips. >> Stay informed about: SD or SDHC? |

Pete D, Your Vosonic (and mine) supports SDHC.
BRH, if performance is an issue, do more research. I use 4GB SDHC cards in
my D80 and have a Sandisk Mini SD Reader which works really well. The
Vosonic is for longer trips, one of which is coming up in November. >> Stay informed about: SD or SDHC? |

I am torn between replacing the old Vosonic 3310 with one of the new 8390s
or just spending more and getting a new laptop and a mini card reader. >> Stay informed about: SD or SDHC? |

Hmm.... That seems like something worth trying. I assume that, if my
camera doesn't like the card-reader's format, that I can simply
re-format the card in the camera, right?
Do you have either an online or bricks-and-mortar source for these cards?
Thanks! >> Stay informed about: SD or SDHC? |

I can understand your dilemma. I thought your Vosonic was a later model -
in the 8 range? Mine is a 6230.
The multimedia storage device versus laptop question is real, but for a trip
involving international flights, for me, the question is easily answered.
The Vosonic wins, but might be accompanied by a Hyperdrive for dual storage.
For domestic vehicular travel, it just depends on the size of the vehicle
and number of passengers.
Having said that, I'm now convinced my next laptop will be a small screen
one, even though I will probably keep this 17" laptop for home use until it
dies of natural causes - lack of RAM being one of the possible causes. >> Stay informed about: SD or SDHC? |

I have not got any big trips planned for a little while so will just wait I
think. >> Stay informed about: SD or SDHC? |
