SB 600 or SB 800

*much* bigger and heavier??

the sb800 is slightly bigger (a few mm in each dimension) and just 50g
heavier. bigger yes, but not by very much.

however, both the sb600 and sb800 are *much* bigger and heavier than
the sb400.

I think much depends on how you want to use it and what distance you want
from your flash. I am definitely a "casual" user, so I may not be the best
source of information. However, I originally bought an SB 800 but then
returned it and bought a SB 600 (which I like very much). I take a great
many indoor pics of my cats and like the flexibility of how the head can
tilt on either speedlight. However, the SB 800 is *much* bigger and heavier
(and reaches farther distances), so it was really "overkill" for me. So, to
repeat, I think it depends on what your uses would be.

the sb800 is 6mm taller than the sb600, or about 1/4 inch. that's not
what i would call 'considerably taller.'

sb600: 68 x 123.5 x 90mm (2.7 x 4.9 x 3.5 in.)
sb800: 70.5 x 129.5 x 93.0mm (2.8 x 5.1 x 3.7 in.)

I did not weight them, but the SB800 was considerably taller than the SB600.
When placed on the camera (I have a Nikon 8800), the SB800 certainly *felt*
much heavier -- and was enough larger that it would not fit in the case I
was using. The point about the case was *not* a deciding factor because I
could easily have the replaced the case. I am using it to show that there
was a noticeable difference in size. I realize that "much heavier" can be
relative, but when comparing to the overall weight and use of a camera, the
difference was important to me. It has been some time, of course, since I
compared them. I thought both were excellent products and for me the
decision rested how they would be used.

one thing the higher guide number of the SB 800 would
give you besides more distance coverage is the ability to
use a smaller aperture for more depth of field - something
to consider too. OTOH, higher ISO would too.
