I have just purchased a Rolleicord , which is described as a IIa by the
vendor and has a serial no of 958551. It has a 1-1/500 shutter.
I have no idea of the date.
However I need to acquaint myself with the loading and operating procedures
specific to a Rolleicord IIa. I want to get it right when loading the film &
not do anything harmful to the shutter.

Neither the serial number nor the shutter speed line up with a 2a....see,
for example, <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://johnsrolleionlypage.homestead.com/Rolleicords.html" target="_blank">http://johnsrolleionlypage.homestead.com/Rolleicords.html</a>

Start looking for manuals at <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.matthes.com/Rollei/Manuals/" target="_blank">http://www.matthes.com/Rollei/Manuals/</a> (He has
one for a III , IV, and V)
and here <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://medfmt.8k.com/mf/index.html" target="_blank">http://medfmt.8k.com/mf/index.html</a>

and here <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.stutterheim.nl/rollei/faq.html" target="_blank">http://www.stutterheim.nl/rollei/faq.html</a> Search the archives in
that last site for a trap in using the fastest shutter speed on early
cords.....is it cock before select? or the other way round? can't remember.

BTW, welcome to the world of cords!

If it helps:
I have now received the camera.
S/n is 998551.
It has DRP/DRGM on the cast name plate.
No sync
Coated lenses
Franck & Heidecke, Braunschweig between the two lenses in very small
capitals.

<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://johnsrolleionlypage.homestead.com/Rolleicords.html" target="_blank">http://johnsrolleionlypage.homestead.com/Rolleicords.html</a>
suggests it is a 1a type 3 particularily if it has a cast name plate

<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://home.worldonline.dk/rongsted/Rolleisn.htm" target="_blank">http://home.worldonline.dk/rongsted/Rolleisn.htm</a>
indicates it is a 1a type 3, but then gives overlapping s/n for various 2
types...too difficult for me.

<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.foto.no/rolleiflex/Rollei-4.html" target="_blank">http://www.foto.no/rolleiflex/Rollei-4.html</a>
indicates 1a3 or 2c

compare the pics on the first site with your cord, and your fastest shutter
speed<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

When did Rollei start to use the Compur Rapid shutter?
This Rollei of mine is obviously a 2 from probably before 1951 (that is if
they stopped using DRGM on the top plate then).
Are there any records from Franke & Heidecke that can give any information?

You may want to subscribe to the Rollei User Group mailing list. The people
that inhabit that list know all there is to know about Rollei. And then
some...

To subscribe to one of the lists, send a mail message to:

majordomo DeleteThis @mejac.palo-alto.ca.us

the body (not the subject) should contain the line

subscribe rollei

if you wish to receive individual messages, or

subscribe rollei-digest

if you wish to receive the digest, which includes many messages
together in one large message.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
