Do they amount to a placebo, making us feel "squared"? Are they only
supposed to be generally accurate; and thus, they are cheap add-ons? With
all the digital gadgetry is there a universal add-on that beeps or lights up
when the camera is "squared" ? Could this be the point of integration
between the Analogs and the Digitals or would this be miscegenation?
Clueless in Port Angeles

I have had two 4x5 cameras in my "career" the first was an Omega Toyo E
monorail it had build on levels which I used all the time initially. The
second camera my Gandolfi does not. I carry a separate level on my key
key now if I require it. One note I worked for approx 3 years as a Land
surveyor setting up leveled instruments every day several times a day.
and laid out buildings, walls and all kinds of roads and sidewalks.
I think that help my sense of plumb and level vastly Smile

I shoot a fair amount of Interior architecture but I don't use the
level much anymore. On occasion though to check myself I do use the
level if the lines of the subject seem wacked on the GG. So the answer
"mine at least" is a level is good to check with or if your starting
out in LF. It is a good idea for architecture work.

I've always found the levels on my Sinar quite useful,
especially when dealing with convergence. I always
begin by zeroing the camera. I don't find tripod levels
nearly as useful or accurate; in fact I let the levels
on my bogen expire a long time ago.

Sinar digital, btw, still uses bubble levels Smile<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I mainly use them to do inital setup. Both my Calumet CC-400 and my Wisner
4x5 T.F. have levels. The way I use them, I would be better off with a
level in the tripod, but my 300 series Gitzo does not have a level in it,
and I see no practical way to glue one on and have it right.

If your camera is yaw-free, has degree marking and settings on the
standards, then the levels on the standards are usefull as a point of
departure. Once set, movements prevail and it is unlikely you will move
off-square, however I personally don't know anyone who relies upon that when
they use movements; using the grid or your keen eye on the glass is better.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

There's no level bubble on my tripod either Smile
I do zero the camera first though.
