Hi Folks,
Can anyone recommend a quality 6x9 camera and lens for someone on a
budget? It doesn't have to be state of the art - an older 60's, 60's
or 70's one will do so long as its going to produce sharp results. I
would prefer to get something thats top-of-the-range but old, rather
than a poor new camera.
Thanks,

Mamiya Universal or super. Can be bought for a few bucks on Ebay. The
6X9 backs are a bit scarce though. I'm still searching for my second one. >> Stay informed about: Recommendations for cheap 6x9? |

Not to worry, it's not like there's a big selection of new 6x9 cameras to
choose from, poor or otherwise. In fact now that Fuji's gone from the medium
format scene I'm not sure anyone still makes a new 6x9 camera. Linhof maybe?
I don't remember anything about their medium format stuff (though for your
purposes it doesn't matter, Linhof and limited budgets don't like each
other).

It depends from ... the "budget".
You can find fine Fuji 690 fixed-lens rangefinder cameras (GW690, for
example) at about $800 in very good conditions...

Yes. At the moment I'm also looking at a Horseman 980, with 6x9 roll
back. But a recessed lens board for a 65 (the kind of FOV I'm looking
for), and a 65 itself, seem not easy to find.
ATM I found those possible options:
Fuji 690 series -> no movements
Fuji 680 series -> huge, heavy; short focal lenses cost an arm and a
leg
Horseman 980/985 -> not really cheap when including shipping in the
EU, but viable. 65 + lensboard not so easy to find.
Horseman Technical Press -> could not find informations about
compatible rollfilm backs and lens boards.
Super Graphic and the likes -> questionable with shorter focal lenses,
still did not find exactly which kind of rollfilm back fits, limited
movements
Meridian 45 -> seems interesting, can be found very cheap, but
spring-type 120 rollfilm backs seem just impossible to find! Plus, I
suspect some kind of adapter is needed for 4x5 -> 120 back?
SIGH!!

Would I be a spoilsport to mention the 6x9 and 6x12 'folding' cameras by
Zeiss and Voitlander? They have shift and rise, and there is plenty of film
available for them from J&. I have a few of these cameras with film
holders, ground glass, the works. Surely, I can't be the only one with them. >> Stay informed about: Recommendations for cheap 6x9? |

You mean those fine '30-'40 cameras (I think also Kodak did some) with
626 (or 620? I don't remember) rollfilm type (with the wooden reel)?
In Italy it's impossible to find such a film.
Actually, in Italy it's impossible to find any film that is not 135,
120 or 4x5". With 4x5 becoming harder and harder to find (and to get
processed).
I'm in love with the Arca Swiss 6x9. But it costs too much...
Now I'm bidding for a Horseman 980 with 6x9 120 film back and the
standard 105 lens. If I win, I'll have to find a 65 with recessed
lensboard.
If not, well, I'll be hunting again for some other camera...
All advices are very welcome!

Close, Fernando! But the cameras I speak of all use modern 120 film.

If you are willing to develop it yourself, as many of us do, then consider
ordering from these people. http://www.jandcphoto.com/ Much of the good
film is made in Croatia (I think), and there's everything a person would
want, although 120 is common and therefore very reasonably priced.

Ach, it's French-made anyway.

There are a lot of 6x9 field and view cameras*, and some specialty things
like the Alpa and Horseman superwides. Some or all of these may be out of
production, though.

True. I was thinking of roll film cameras rather than field/view cameras
with roll film backs.

I have a Horseman recessed lensboard that I don't need and that might be
what you would need - if you win, and are interested, get in touch and we
can 'do a deal'.

I have this one http://www.ritzcam.com/catalog/images/MaximarB.JPG which is
about 6x9. Movements are limited to rise and shift. You can super-extend the
lens for macros. The finders (2) are close enough to frame, then you can use
either zone focus or focus using the ground glass. When folded, the camera
fits in your pocket. (It uses sheet film or an accessory 120 roll film
back.)
Here is a Zeiss folder that is strictly 120 roll film. It has a rangefinder.
http://regis.boissier.free.fr/fotofexcameras/cameras%20for%20trade/g_z...s_super
But it has no movements, and neither do the other rangefinder Zeiss cameras. >> Stay informed about: Recommendations for cheap 6x9? |

Thank you! I'm scared my the idea of non-120 or 135 processing (I do
process BW 120 and 135 myself), expecially after having read this
article about self-processing 4x5" sheets:
http://www.largeformatphotography.info/alternative-developing/
Dishearting, for me at least!

Yes... a colleague of mine has one of them with a SuperAngulon 47 I
think. Beautiful mechanic, and beautiful results BTW (but then, it's
the photographer...)
Thank you!

Don't take half of what you read as gospel in that article.
Everyones experience is different.
I process sheet film especially Ilford in the Jobo Cpp2, I always prewet film despite
what the manufacturers state (Because I have found it does produce even processing results
in my Jobo). I also tip the drum once per minute
so I get perfectly even results. I also use the print drums
as opposed to the film drums for 8x10 film (one sheet at a time though)
Their are lots of ways to accurately develop sheets or rolls and it all just takes
ongoing practice.
