What a rush! I was just narrowly saved by fellow bidders from
paying USD63 combined for Velbon QRA-667 & QRA-635, plus $10-11 in
shipping.

Now that i have found Velbon QB-635 (plate) not to be enough[0] to hold
a 24 oz lens in place vertically, i am looking for alternatives,
Arca Swiss style QR being the main one.

Ok, before i dive in it, could somebody do an experiment for me who
has ~24 oz (i suppose +/- 2-3 oz would be ok) lens (Minolta 70-210mm
f/4 is an example) and Arca Swiss style QR combination?

Experiment itself is simple...

- Mount the camera on the head (on a tripod) w/ ~24 oz lens
horizontally.

- Rotate the head 90 degrees (to change the film orientation to
vertical format)

- Note if the camera moves/unscrews on the mounting plate (due to
lens exerting force downward)

- Post the results

Any volunteers?

Parv,

The thing about the A/S type QR system is that it's great if there are
custom plates available for your body, but somewhat less wonderful if
that's not the case. As I recall, Minolta is poorly supported.

So, if there IS a custom plate for your body, there is little doubt that
it would hold your setup to your satisfaction. If not, you may find the
same problem as with the Velbon system.

That's good advice, Lisa.

However, it is very easy to have Arca-style QR plates modified to
obtain a close fit to an individual camera or lens. With only a
little ability, it is very easy to do yourself, at a tiny fraction of
the price of Kirk or RRS custom plates, using a Dremel, a tap to make
threaded holes and some Allen head bolts.

But if you want the kudos of owning finely-crafted plates that look
elegant in themselves, you should expect to pay high prices.
