I bought a used Canon D30 last Sept. for $400, I've been shooting up a storm
ever since. No problems, but I'd advise buying it from someone you know and
trust, not some one on ebay with no vested interest in making it good after
the sale. In other words, B&H, KEH, local store where you can try it out
before you buy it (this is what I did.)

I think you'll have to wait a little longer before you start finding used
D70s anywhere.

If you're not set on Nikon why not look at a Canon D30 or D60 - lots of used
ones about around half the price of the D70 / 10D etc.

There's no reason to be any more worried about buying a used dSLR as a film
SLR. Use the same common sense when dealing with the seller and look out for
signs of excessive wear / use.
e.g. if the hot-shoe, memory-card slot or output sockets seem worn/scratched
then you can assume it has been used more heavily than a cleaner example.

I would worry about dirty image sensors.
This issue is nonexistent with used film cameras.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

How does the D30 and D60 compare on image quality w/D70 or EOS300D ?

I am definetely an amateur, but I'm very interesting in learning and
practicing, etc.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

From the experience of many on this newsgroup cleaning sensors is a
cakewalk.

And presumably you can check the sensor by shooting a few test shots - one
with the lens cap on (to test for dead cells) and one shooting at a totally
white, smooth surface (to test for dirt) ?

About the same, all use blurry Bayer monochrome sensors...

Canon D30 has 3M monochrome sensors, 0.8MP after color interpolation.
Canon D60 has 6M monochrome sensors, 1.5MP after color interpolation.
Nikon D70 has 6M monochrome sensors, 1.5MP after color interpolation.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
