Just wondering how the Zeiss Planar got its name. Planar is a rather
ordinary word that means Plane. Does this suggest that the lens is best used
as a straight-on lens .. or what?

Flat image field. The double-Gauss design has inherently low field
curvature and astigmatism. This is also true of the wide angle
double-Gauss, otherwise known as the Topogon or Metrogon. By
comparison, triplet and Tessar types suffer zonal astigmatism, and
Plasmats have noticeable field curvature.
