So now I have a D70 I thought I'd buy some decent but affordable software, I
eventually decided on Photoshop Elements 4 fortunatley I downloaded the
trial version first to make sure it would read NEF files only to find that
it won't work on anything other than XP. Bit research & I found that version
3 will work on my Windows 2000 but Adobe don't sell it. How many customers
will that lose them . I ended up buying the Nikon Capture software.

Best Wishes
Bruce

You shouldn't have a problem finding version 3 of Elements being sold, I see
it at computer fairs all the time. Try online searches, I'll bet you find
it within the first few links.

And the problem with Elements 3 is it does not have the latest ACR (RAW).

Presumably, Adobe have done their sums and made a business decision that
any extra income from Windows 2000 customers would not cover the extra
support and testing effort required for the older OS.

You might be able to find an older version of PhotoShop LE on ebay. It
should work with all Windoze systems as well as Mac classic (through 9.2).

That's easy enough to fix - just download 3.2 (or 3.3 beta) from Adobe.

That version doesn't run on Elements 3. That's his point.

I thought the OP said that Elements *4* won't work on 2000, but
Elements 3 will. In fact, I'm sure that's what he said.

Presumably, version 3 patches won't change that.

I have said anything related to Elements 4 or Elements 3 running on 2000.
These previous three messages are regarding the Adobe Camera RAW plugins.

You trimmed waaaaay too much. Elements 3 will run on 2000 but ACR 3.2 (or
3.3 beta) will not work with Elements 3.0.

There are new features, very useful ones, in ACR 3.2 that are not in ACR 2.4
which is the latest that will work with Elements 3.0.

The original poster is not only missing out on the new features of Elements
4.0 but he is also missing out on the new features of ACR 3.2.

Perhaps you should check your facts before rushing to 'correct' people.
Elements 3.0 has no problem using Camera Raw 3.x - I've run it with 3.1
and 3.2, and I know of people using the 3.3 beta without problems

While you can't use ACR 3.x with Photoshop CS - you need CS2 - there
are no such restriction with Elements 3.0

Me culpa. I'll have to revisit Elements 3.0, I've been using CS for
awhile now and could have sworn that ACR 3.2 didn't work with 3.0 so
there was no reason for me to use Elements 3.0 any more.

Sorry about the misinformation. Now that I think about it I probably
confused myself between Elements 2.0 which I have on my PC laptop, and
Elements 3.0 and CS that I have on my Mac desktop.

John:
I use ACR 3.1 to produce DNG files directly from the NEF files (outside
of PS) then the DNG files can be opened with PS CS. This allows the use of
3.1 (and presumably 3.2, 3.3, Etc.) without needing PSCS2.
For example 3.1 supports EXIF "user comments", where 2.4 didn't.
What am I missing here (other than not upgrading from PSCS to PSCS2)??

Don't you mean you're converting NEF files to DNG using the DNG
converter and then opening them with the ACR 2.4 plugin for PS CS? If
not, then I'm a little confused (as usual). IIRC ACR is not a
standalone program but the DNG converter is. And the ACR 3.2 plugin has
more control than the 2.4 series plugin.

I'm a little hesitant to post this as I have neither my Mac or PC booted
to double-check and clearly that has led me to posting misinformation
before.

Greg:
That's correct the 3.1 converter is a standalone program released with
ACR 3.1 and it has better "support" of the EXIF info in the NEF files than
did either ACR 2.4 or the 2.4 converter.
Once the NEF files are changed to DNG files, those files can be opened
in PS CS (with the 2.4 ACR plug-in installed of course) and the information
which was unavailable if the NEF files were opened directly in PS CS with
ACR 2.4 now becomes visible because of the conversion to DNG by the 3.1
converter.
I guess you are correct when you say the ACR 2.4 plug-in is opening
them. I just never thought of it that way. I look upon it more of a way to
keep up with the necessity of changing to accommodate new camera NEF files
without having to upgrade to PS CS2. Simply download the updated DNG
converter to handle the new camera NEF files and you are in business.
Are you aware of anything I am missing here??
