Overall I like your work. You need more of it on the site and I'm sure
you'll put more up.
The bird skeleton on the front page needs to be spotted for dust and
scratches.
The web design overall if definitely homebrew--better than I could do
if I had to myself, but far from state of the art in photo sites.
Whether or not you want to improve that depends entirely on who you
want looking at the site. Gallery owners might turn up their nose at
it unless you do a splashy job of it (probably by hiring a pro to do
it).

You want to have a way to navigate from one picture to another without going
back to the menu page.
See my web site for one way to do this.

The aviary ossuary frame leaves a bad impression due to the crap on the
print. Several of your links don't seem to work right. Site navigation
is cumbersome. The "cropped swatch" rather than "thumbnail" catalog is
unique to your site and doesn't work well. A couple of the pix are
interesting but most don't speak to me in a comprehensible dialect.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: B&W Photo portfolio - looking for comments/criticism/advice |

Like the others said, I wouldn't have given your sites a second look,
based solely on the sloppy presentation of your images. If you don't
care enough to retouch them, why should I think you care about
photography at all? You also have major technical mistakes in your
processing, evident by the brighter sides of your prints (due to bad
film processing, giving more density on the edges of your film, which
print up lighter).
IMO, you need to go back to the drwaing board and learn from the
beginning.

Thank you all for your forthright responses.
Clearly I was not effective in conveying what I had intended. The
"crap" that was on my opening image was conciously there in an attempt
to give the photo the appearance that it was an older image, not one
from the days of digital manipulation and technological perfection. I
thought that the subject matter and the typeface that I had selected
would make this more clear. I believe that beautiful photography can
be taken with a polaroid, a brownie, a toy camera, a pinhole, etc.
Part of the appeal of old photographs are their "imperfections"; they
can lend to mystery and interpretation. Unfortunately, the scanner
that I have is poor and does not get good density at the edges, so the
technical problem you are referring to is actually a technical
problem, but not one of my processing. But since that worked to the
aestetic I was going for, I was unconcerned.
As to not caring about photography at all? I can't even come up with
a response.

I had similar thoughts as the other poster: You had crap in your pictures.
You hadn't taken the time to correct it. You might be better off using a
sepia tone on perfect images to convey an impression of age.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: B&W Photo portfolio - looking for comments/criticism/advice |

Ignoring your criticism of his website for the time being, I have to say
going to your website and siting there waiting while it runs an animated
'loading....' graphic just doesn't really cut it either, especially for
a *commercial website* that offers services requiring payment.....
And no I didn't wait for the "loading..." graphic to finish before
giving up waiting to see what it was you're trying to sell me......

I think you are confusing 'old' with 'messy'... The picture doesn't look old
to me, it just looks like it wasn't spotted correctly. I have plenty of old
photo's from the 1920's and they are all spotted correctly...
I made no connection whatsoever with the typeface or the 'subject matter'
that would have made me understand why you have a picture on your homepage
that needs serious work.

Never made it past the "plug-in required" message. Professional sites always
let you skip to an html version in case you don't want to screw around with
plug ins.

Thanks again for all of your comments.
I have cleaned up the image on the front page.
Please tell me if you think that this works better or help me with
some advice on how I can improve my presentation.

Not being qualified enough to comment on your photography, other than they
seem to be quite dark in some cases, can I suggest you visit
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.html-helper.com" target="_blank">www.html-helper.com</a> for Thumbnail Factory, it's free and works wonderfully.
p.s. I am an amateur photographer and amateur website developer, heavy on
the amateur in both cases, just thought that you could use help with
thumbnailing your pic's.

Interesting. I had first looked at them assuming they were thumbnails,
and not looked at the full size images until reading this. Actually, I
think some of the crops are more interesting.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: B&W Photo portfolio - looking for comments/criticism/advice |
