Hi, I just purchased a used Pentax 6x7 with TTL Prism. My main reason for
getting this camera is for landscape photography. I like to shoot in the
Sierras and out in the desert.
My first lens will be either the 45mm f4 or the 55mm f4. I'd really like
some opinions on these lenses. Aside from the obvious field of view
difference, I'd like to hear some of the pros and cons of each lens.

Also, any opinions on the Takumar lenses will also be appreciated.

Thanks to all of you for your input.

I loved the big Pentax for pictorials. But it's been too long...can't
remember what lenses I had. But they were all good.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I think for most people the 55 is wide enough for landscape work. I have 4
Pentax 6x7 lenses and the 55 f/4 is the widest I have, and I have never felt
the need to have something wider. But obviously this depends on the
photographer.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I think I had that one, but also had one that was 30mm or 35mm for
extreme wide angle...also had a 300 .<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

The widest Pentax 6x7 currently made is the 35mm, which Pentax calls a
Fish-Eye lens. Angle of view is 180 degrees.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

The one I had wasn't a fisheye but much wider than you'd get with a
28mm on a 35. Maybe it was 40-something. It was too long ago. But I
really liked the Pentax6x7 system for most things. Not real good in
the studio or weddings, but everything else it was great.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I've owned both of these lenses. I first had the 45, after using it for a
while I sold it and bought the 55 which I still have. I found that the 45
was wider than I needed and IIRC had some barrel distortion. The 55 produces
what to me is a more "natural" wide look. For a first lens I'd suggest the
55 unless you're a fan of the obvious wide angle look. They were both
otherwise excellent lenses. Both were/are Pentax lenses, I've never used any
of the older Takumar lenses.

I've had both and like Sandy, owned the 45 first and determined it was
wider than most situations required. I now have a 55 and get much
better use from it. Both are good optically, with an edge to the 55.
I actually find that I use my 75 the most and for my perspective, it
is as wide as most situations require for me. Get a good hood, too.

The 55 is way better. The 45 is too soft for landscape work and also
lower in contrast<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
