As the volume of traffic on this and some other photo
groups has declined the amount of spam and junk has
increased. I think spammers like relatively empty groups or
else its just that the readers don't bother to report spam.

If no one reads then no one reports. If one uses a browser and accesses
via Google one almost only sees spam. Using Newswatcher I see relatively
no spam.....and can delete it or kill the post immediately.

I do not know. I think it is difficult to determine cause and effect. I
could state that as the amount of spam and junk has increased, the postings
of those who used to contribute has decreased. I know comp.os.linux.misc has
gotten so bad that I could no longer filter out all the bot-generated spam,
so I have just about quit reading there.
Here, I have gotten tired of the same old stuff posted over and over. This
is not quite a complaint because new people have the same questions year
after year, and I lament the passing of dejanews. Google does not really
take its place.
And spam in e-mails is getting worse. In the mid 1990s the spam level of
e-mail was probably less than 50%, but now it seems to be between 90% and
95%. Soon the Internet will become useless. It is a pity.

I get relatively no spam in email I can not trace to someone I've given
my address. I never respond to garbage. I also have a www. site and have
limited direct email to me in several ways. One: I made all the email
boxes for my site have an address to I use two addresses, all incoming
email from the site gets filtered and has to come from a detailed
response form. I am relatively happy

A lot of mine seems to be from trojans that invade mailboxes of friends and
capture their address books. They then send me e-mail allegedly from my
friends, but they never sent them.
The next batch is where the spammer has a million monkeys typing e-mail
addresses for their clients who then want me to send my eBay account
information (there is none, since I avoid eBay), my Bank of America account,
and such. My ISP's spam filter weeds out most of the Viagra and Vicodin
type adds. I still get the Nigerian hoaxes.
I am going back to the telephone and snail mail for important communications.

All you have to do is send an email from that account to any compromised
computer and the address will end up on a spammer's list. Home users
are generally clueless about computer security, and many small
businesses aren't any better, while big business systems are attractive
to serious data thieves. But to keep things in perspective, I've never
been paranoid about protecting my email addresses and I'm not
overwhelmed by spam. As for spam in the newsgroups, I hardly see any
because my NSP has good filtering. >> Stay informed about: New Paper technology in our world : |

I was thinking of posting every AOL email address I could to the alt.*
groups on the USENET just to see how they would like having their
address shared without consent !

Sounds like an operator error. But then this is why Microsoft came up
with Vista. 10 layers of security to protect users from themselves.

I had to smile when I read that. I work for a university where every
student and faculty member has a laptop computer, Mac or PC. Students in
particular will just load up on malware and wait until their computer just
won't work before they come in for help. BTW, Norton's suite helps a lot,
as does the email server (I don't know what they use there.)
But the best story - last month a young lady came in with a really messed up
laptop (PC). "I am a very careful person!" she exclaimed, "I have all the
anti-virus software a person can get." She had so many anti-something
programs that almost nothing worked.
FWIW, this year Apple bid on both the PC and Mac platforms. We might become
a single-vendor site. >> Stay informed about: New Paper technology in our world : |

Is Micro$oft finally adopting the fine granularity of protection that was
recommended when they first looked to OpenVMS as a security model? >> Stay informed about: New Paper technology in our world : |

On "the USENET"? Is that anything like "the internets"? (You know, all
them tubes and such.) >> Stay informed about: New Paper technology in our world : |
