Post subject: Film/Paper Question
Archived from groups: rec>photo>film+labs (more info?)

I have been asked to take photos of my aunt's 80th. birthday party in a few
weeks. The party will be held outdoors, and I will be using a lot of
fill-flash. I have just about every color negative and black & white film ever
made from every manufacturer in the last 10+ (both 35mm and APS) in my freezer
(well over 300 rolls). It's a big hobby of mine, and I love to try new films (I
guess I tend to carried away...lol). I have two local photo labs that do
excellent work, one uses a Fuji Frontier and Fuji Crystal Archive paper, and
the other an Agfa machine (non-digital) and Agfa Prestige Paper. I'd like an
opinion on what film and camera I should use. I have an Nikon Pronea 6i APS SLR
w/Nikkor 20-60ix zoom, and a Nikon N60 w/Nikkor 50 1.8 and Sigma 28-200 zoom.
I'd be using a Nikon SB-23 Speedlight with either for fill-flash. I think I've
narrowed down the film to Fuji Reala, Fuji Superia 200, Kodak Gold 100, Kodak
Royal Gold 100, Kodak High Definition 400, Agfa Ultra 100, Agfa Vista 400, or
Fuji F-100 (APS, that was the very fined-grained version that's no longer
produced). I guess that's not really narrowing it down! Some of the photo's
will probably be enlarged to about 8x10 or so, and the longevity of the paper
is important to me, as this is a one-time event that I'd like to document for
generations to come. So...what camera, what film, and does anyone have any info
on the longevity of Fuji Crystal Archive vs. Agfa Prestige? I'm trying to stay
away from Kodak paper, as I've read that it's not as archival as Agfa or Fuji.
Thanks for any help!

If you want long term stability B&W film and paper is the best choice in my opinion.
However thats not the question, I would chose the film with the best speed that
you can do, tightest grain and best color.

My counter question is where did you read that Kodak color papers
are less archival? On the Fuji or Agfa website?

Thanks for the advice. Actually, I think I read it in either a recent Newsweek
or U.S. News article while waiting in my doctor's office. It was an article
about the "digital photo revolution" or something to that effect. It was
comparing some of the pros and cons with traditional photography, and on of the
comparison charts had some name brand inkjet papers vs. traditional photo
papers in regard to archival properties. The two traditional photo papers they
used for comparisom Were Fuji Crystal Archive (it was either 120 or 160 yrs.,
as I remember), and Kodak Edge 8 (26 yrs.) before any visually noticeable
fading occurs. The results were based on accelerated ageing tests conducted by
Wilhelm Research.

I'm sorry, my memory wasn't correct in my last post. I re-checked, and the
numbers were Fuji Crystal Archive (65 yrs.) Kodak Edge 8 (26 yrs.) Still,
that's a huge difference.

Fuji Crystal archive is a pro paper, Edge is not. Kodak Endura
is compariable to Crystal archive but I think
the 65 years has been down played for the article
probably more like 75 years. I read the same article I believe,
one thing we should realize is that writers for most of those
type magazines have nominal skills in doing the research and understanding
the meaning derived from places like Whilhelm Research.
And they want to sell the story to the magazine.

the aristocracy was the problem in 1776, the aristocracy is the problem today
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.aclv.org/dissentreport" target="_blank">http://www.aclv.org/dissentreport</a>
Aristocrats CRUCIFIED Jesvs
we mvst close the door by which aristocracy arises

Martin Lvther King Jr said
"I have a dream that one day this nation will rise vp and live ovt the trve
meaning of its creed: "We hold these trvths to be self-evident: that all
men are created eqval."

and their creed became, I REFUSE TO DREAM

and when we REFUSE TO DREAM? when we go on a strike? when we propose
laissez faire with respect to what we control? WELL, yov see the story of
laissez faire changes qvick, immediately there is not a hands-off policy,
and we are forced back to work, via anti-strike legislations, Taft-Hartley
acts, etc., not only are we not allowed to dream ovr dream, we are forced
to keep dreaming their's, we are niether allowed to dream or not dream,
and svch is how Pharoah robs a man of his asylvm in himself, and sets vp
Pharoah as man's only asylvm (http://www.mysolvtion.ws/cabal.htm)

Statements of svpposed science, withovt statistics, are jvst as mvch religion,
and ONLY statements of faith as any religion, or statement of faith,
except they profess the svpposed scientist is God, even more
dangerovs than religion or God. There is no science, withovt a statement of
statistics, AND any statement withovt statistics, is a conjectvre of faith
by the professor of svch statement, and the "believer". An ethical
hovse cleaning of science and government is in order.

"Does God want goodness? or the choice of goodness?
Is the man who chooses bad, somehow better,
than the man who has the good forced vpon him?"

Enlightenment is man's release from his self-incvrred tvtelage.
Tvtelage is man's inability to make vse of his vnderstanding
withovt direction from another. Self-incvrred is this tvtelage when
its cavse lies not in lack of reason bvt in lack of resolvtion
and covrage to vse it withovt direction from another. Sapere avde!
"Have covrage to vse yovr own reason!" - that is the motto
of enlightenment.

"It all svms vp into one single pvrpose,
the abolition of dog-eat-dog vnder which we live...
and I traveled the United Front road to get it."

"How is it that ye do not vnderstand that I spake it not to yov concerning bread, that ye shovld beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Saddvcees? Then vnderstood they how that he bade them not beware of the leaven of bread, bvt of the doctrine of the Pharisees and of the Saddvcees."--Matthew 16:11-12

"Bvt woe vnto yov, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shvt vp the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yovrselves, neither svffer ye them that are entering to go in."--Matthew 23:13

"Woe vnto yov, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devovr widows' hovses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation."--Matthew 23:14

"Woe vnto yov, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yovrselves."--Matthew 23:15

"Woe vnto yov, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cvmmin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, jvdgment, mercy, and faith: these ovght ye to have done, and not to leave the other vndone."--Matthew 23:23

"Woe vnto yov, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the ovtside of the cvp and of the platter, bvt within they are fvll of extortion and excess."--Matthew 23:25

"Woe vnto yov, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! becavse ye bvild the tombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepvlchres of the righteovs,"--Matthew 23:29

For what it's worth, Fuji makes both consumer and pro emulsions/versions of
their Crystal Archive paper (obviously with different characteristics).
