Sandhill cranes may be interesting to watch, but they aren't the best
of neighbors. I live on a golf course in Florida, and there are
several pair of Sandhills that live on the fairways near my house.
They are loud and noisy, especially early in the morning.
They like the open space and closely mowed grass of the fairway, but
they do occasionally wander into my yard (which is mostly woodsy and
planted). They are the calmest birds I've ever seen. When my dog
goes out to chase them away, the Sandhills just ignore her and stroll
away in their own good time. Of course my dog is a Cocker and the
Sandhills are 3' to 4' tall.

For 15 years I lived on Sandhill Road in Menlo Park, California. One day, I
saw a Sandhill crane standing in the center strip of the freeway where it
went over Sandhill road....It seemed to be saying, "I don't care what you
guys try to do with it, it's still my hill and I'm sticking to it!" >> Stay informed about: THE PROBLEM WITH NEWSGROUPS IS .... |

If they could talk, I'm sure they would say the same thing about us.

Sandhill cranes are omnivorous and eat anything from worms to tubers.
Golfers are good neighbors to them because they create divots and make
it easier to get at the worms and other little creatures that live
beneath the surface.

When the guy was bending over, I guess it was like a bull's eye. One
