(sorry, all Canon references should be to TS-E)

And even if they don't sell in huge amounts, they are the type of lenses
that can sell camera systems. If I was seriously in the need of a tilt
shift lens Nikon all of a sudden became a very attractive brand. So
I'll buy a Nikon D3 instead of a Canon and the tilt lens. Now that I
have my D3 I'll probably want a few other lenses for it as well. So
even if Nikon didn't make any money off of selling me a tilt/shift lens,
they certainly made money off of me buying a D3 and a bunch of other
lenses for it.

Mostly it's just pointless usenet noise, in the real world very few
entry level users have any desire for prime lenses, if they really want,
there's Sigma, if that's not good enough there's some exquisite f/2.8
wide zooms available but really, anyone headed that direction should get
at least a D80 or go Pentax, Sony or Canon. It's a small number, the
point of the D40 is to be small and inexpensive for the mass market.

The only AF-S lenses missing are super fast primes. Not too many people

Yes that would be nice but there just isn't much market for those kinds
of lenses. Those are 1988 style lenses. If that's really what you want,
don't buy into Nikon but I don't think enough people care to matter.
Besides, yes they do want beginnes moving upward to buy a new camera Smile

> Nikon is doing something wrong when Sigma 30mm lenses are highly

That's because a 28mm f/1.4 is tough to make. I guess Nikon figures they
couldn't do much better than Sigma so why bother. The cropped sensor
means a fast normal lens is not going to be affordable. They could do a
35mm f/2 but hardly anyone buys the regular AF version. The 50-85mm
range could be done but that's a portrait lens, kind of specialized for
entry level and manual focus is actually more useful for that kind of
work. A 105/2.8 macro could fill that need if you really want AF & VR
though it's $800.

That's a useful list, Paul. Thanks for posting.

I wonder what is wrong with people who say that some Nikkors "don't
work on the D40/D40X) when in fact all their features work perfectly
well, except autofocus.

Is it really so much of a problem for people to focus manually? I
focus manually most of the time, even with my AF zoom lenses.
