What kind of idiot would do this? I suggest to anyone looking at this
feature, go buy a frigging video camera, they cost next to nothing,
and you can cavort with the rest of your "kind."

Thom Hogan usually uses reason, and I don't disagree, but he doesn't
allow for the fact that new camera buyers often use emotion tempered by
confusion, and are more likely to read Ken Rockwell than his site.
I think that the D60 is a mistake - unless Nikon follows up soon with a
D80 replacement with liveview, the big new lcd, & D300 sensor.
Nikon has the top end (if you exclude the Canon 5d) and bottom end of
the dslr market sewn up. In between is also very important.

Nikon has the top end (if you exclude the Canon 5d) and bottom end of
the "prosumer" dslr market sewn up quite well. In between is also very

That's only between 3 and 6 seconds of video, depending on the frame rate, not
even enough to do 1 scene...

I wonder why they bothered?

(Standard video is either 24 or 30 frames per sec, cartoons can run as low as
15.)

You can set a program like Pinnacle Studio to load stills, set them to 32
milisecs or whatever, and load in 1000 pics for a scene, and it outputs a movie
clip.

Do they have a size setting of 1920 x 1080?? Or 720 x 480?

at 3fps, it's over thirty seconds of video. it also creates it from
consecutive images which do not necessarily have to be taken in
succession.

> I wonder why they bothered?

because it's fairly easy to implement and will probably entice some
buyers.

it's not intended to be a video camera.

that's true, but this is *out of the camera* with no additional
software needed.

> Do they have a size setting of 1920 x 1080?? Or 720 x 480?

according to nikon, the movie is created from full resolution 10 mpix
images, with the movie rendered in a few different sizes.

Given the expected shutter life of an entry level dslr, you should be
able to make about an hour of stop-animation video before the camera
goes in the trash bin. If it gets popular, then it might increase entry
level dslr sales considerably.

Plenty of people ask here how to make an animation from a sequence of
still DSLR images. This camera does it for you.

Yes, if you want video-rate movies you can use a low-cost small-sensor
camera instead (and you'd probably take that along in any case as a backup
for your DSLR).

The page currently says:

"I suspect Nikon has introduced the D60 to replace the D40x, and slots the
D60 under the D80 and above the D40."

It's a short cut to wiping out the shutter mechanism ;o)

I doubt it was a mistake. Most likely the production runs of D40 and D40x
were completed some time ago, existing stocks are getting sold off, and
rather than make another run of either in its original form they made some
improvements and are marketing it as a new model. Makes sense to me. . . .
Depending on the price point of course.

I find it interesting that all the other information is now available on
various Nikon websites except for price. I speculate that the announcement
was ready and expected press date was pushed up from the start of PMA due to
the leaks and rummors, but that the SRP will depend on what other new models
are announced at PMA. I have heard about a new Canon 450? which is said to
compete but I have no feature or price information to compare.

The original leak said that the D40 would continue to be sold but that the
D40x would only be available in Japan. I note that the Canadian website
continues to list the D40 and D40x bodies and kits, but that the D40x has
not been available for shipment this year, and that the current SRP prices
have not changed.

I had wanted to purchase a D40x but suspect that I will need to wait till
the dust settles. Any strategy or advice welcome.

That's interesting. I wonder why.

Checking just now I see that Adorama and Beach Camera both have the D40x for
sale, presumably in stock since they don't say otherwise, though Beach only
lists it as "body only." Adorama has it with various lens choices. I haven't
checked any other sellers but assume if those two have it probably others
do.

IMO it's a mistake although what you point out might make sense from an
engineering/production POV.

Take a look now, and there are so many new models, Pentax/Samsung,
Olympus, and now Sony that I've lost track of model numbers. "Only"
10mp and no liveview is really "old hat". Nikon have nothing with
liveview and over 10mp except for the expensive D300 (&D3). It will be
an interesting year. IMO Nikon will be toast in consumer dslr sales if
they don't announce release of an updated D80 soon.

They can only hope to sell on the Nikon name, and good value offerings
in consumer & "kit" lenses.

It's not for taking video, it's for making 'stop action' animations - very
popular these days with DSLRs.

I know 2 people doing this, one uses a D70, the other uses film...

My nephew does this in collage with a D70... I'll have to ask how his shutter is
holding out!

Whats it cost to replace the shutter is the question...
