There is some fogging from age, but I have never heard of it being much,
as in 10 to 20 year old black and white film still being usable. There is
also some deterioration in speed, but depending upon how you process your
film, it may not be a problem.
What I can't even speculate on to answer you question is how hot does your
storage area get? If you have a root cellar or a cool basement, where it never
goes above 70f, it will last a lot longer than in an attic where it can go
over 100F in many places.
As a guess, I would say that if you plan to use it in the next 5 years,
and it does not get extremely hot, don't bother to refrigerate it.
5 to 10 years keep in the refrigerator and more than 10 years in the freezer.
This is assuming some loss in speed, and contrast due to fogging is not
critical. So if you are keeping it for astrophotgraphy, the freezer is it,
while if it's just non critical snaps, don't bother.
Geoff.

I've had fairly good luck ordering film online. There was the time Adorama
held up my film delivery for three weeks because another item on the order
was out-of-stock. Irritating.

Guys, please.
Film at room temp, or at 39C / 100F for that matter is _frozen_.
Putting it in a freezer does not make it any more frozen, just colder.

Absolutely correct...
An object in a solid state is 'frozen', if that object is then thawed, it
becomes liquid. A steel beam in building construction is frozen, even if the
building is in the desert. When that beam was originally formed, it was
molded (extruded?) in a liquid form. Perhaps if it were heated further than
it's liquid point, you could have steel gas. Conversely, oxygen in it's
usual state is a gas. If oxygen is cooled enough it becomes a liquid. And if
cooled even further, I suppose you could have a solid block of oxygen.
But putting your film in the freezer (even though it is already 'frozen')
will not doubt slow down any chemical reaction in the emulsion, making it
last longer.
Perhaps we could agree to say that while we are not freezing the film, we
are freezing the chemical reaction in the emulsion? >> Stay informed about: Used MF Prices --- I Should be Happy but not |

I am sorry that you were inconvenienced; this usually happens only
either when a customer chooses a free shipping option. Occasionally,
if we are expecting an imminent shipment from a manufacturer which
includes an item missing from an order, we might hold an order for a
day or so; problems liker the one you describe can occur when a
manufacturer or distributor lets us down, and doesn't deliver as
promised. We are then left disappointing our customers, which we don't
like to do.
If you ever have a query or concern regarding a future order from
Adorama Camera - or AdoramaPix - please don't hesitate to contact me
directly.
Sincerely
