I'm waiting for folks to come over here (at least, for awhile) seeking refuge
from the noise in rec.photo.digital. So, for entertainment value . . .
If someone asks you what the three most important things to look for in a
digital camera (in priority order), how would you answer?
To start the discussion, I offer:
1) Lens quality
2) Megapixels
3) Optical zoom range.
Your opinions?

I'd substitute "range of available lenses" for #3. And probably for
#1 as well, because the quality of the lenses available is right up
there with the type, focal length, and so forth, in importance.
And how can you leave off price? It's a major determinant in nearly
all my photo purchases.

rec.photo.equipment.35mm has been ruined too...

1) lens quality
2) Responsiveness/ergonomics
3) Megapixels
coming from using film slr's, i just can't handle the sluggishness of
some digital camera's!

I would say rather
1) Control Usability
2) Lens quality
3) Optical Zoom Range
If a camera is hard to use, or the controls are not intuitive, then you
will not use the camera, then the rest of it becomes a non-issue. I
would put lens quality second, and zoom third, with 6MP and larger
sensors and most prints being 8 x 10 or smaller, it's really a non-issue.

Lens quality is pretty important.
I think the other two of three most important aspects are dynamic range
and noise. I would rather have a crisp, clean, sharp image with fewer
megapixels than a gritty hi-res photo with blown out highlights (or lost
shadows).
I might put lens first.

Hi,
I am a refugee from rec.photo.digital and it is such a shame that one
or two demented posters could kill such an interesting newsgroup. As
far as your question, in my opinion:
1. CCD quality (lack of noise, color accuracy)
2. Lens quality
3, Optical zoom ange<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Discussion fodder for rec.photo.digital refugees |

The correct answer is (0) None of the above. The first thing one
should look for is the quality of the system that's being considered.
In other words are the lenses, accessories and add-ons that you need
to support your own interest available, and are they likely to meet
your needs now and in the future?
Absolutely the last thing I'd look for is (3) Optical zoom range,
since in this case, the more it is, the lousier the lens--and I can't
think of any exceptions.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Discussion fodder for rec.photo.digital refugees |

I agree. I left .35 even before .digital.

Interesting question. From most of the answers so far it seems that
everyone is assuming you mean DSLR cameras. However, since you just said
'digital camera' then there is no way I could answer that question with
anything other than another question:
"What do you intend to do with it?"
It seems that it might be a good idea to come up with a list of various
classifications of how people use their digital cameras. All the way from
the cheap fun cam for point and shoot party pictures to the digital
cameras they attach to telescopes. (Check out Astronomy magazine.
Amateurs are doing some amazing things these days.)
If we could 'cannonize' that list it might make future discussions a
little less confusing.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Discussion fodder for rec.photo.digital refugees |
