Except when you have to wade through a customer unfriendly phone
mail system, then here this call may be monitored to insure quality
service or for training purposes "BS"
Anyway wading through phone mail systems and then are only allowed to
leave a message on someone voice mail is not pleasant when dealing with
defective and return issues.
Its almost like some of these place don't like doing the business they
are in.

I just thought I would add that I've bought a slug (a financial term
that cannot be clarified in the presence of spouses) of stuff from Jeff
and never had a problem. I think he is a great source of information
and equipment. But then again, I've also never personally had a problem
when I bought from Ron Wisner. The point is we all have different
experiences at different times. Maybe from some of the posts Matt will
accept that one buying experience at Badger may not be indicative of
future experiences. Then again, it's his money and he should spend it
where he is comfortable. Most importantly, I hope Matt enjoys his
camera.

Camera stores that deal with professionals
expect their customers to know what they want.
I discovered this even as a kid down in the
camera stores on 34th Street in New York City,
tagging along after my dad.
I grant you with LF gear it's really hard to
find a shop where you can look over the camera
in a liesurely manner and pick and choose between
competing models.
The only way to do anything like that nowadays is
with web research, and of course it's not quite
the same thing.
Jeff may have been annoyed to answer what he
considered "newbie" questions -- and particularly
so if he was busy. Probably would have been
happy to chat if business was slow.
Say, did this particular story take place during
the Xmas shopping season?

I don't entirely agree. For instance when I had the difficulty
with Mamiya I had posted my difficulties in the
rec.photo.equipment.medium-format group. I also copied them to the
Mamiya's website. I thin spoke with Henry Froelich who was the pres.
of MAC. I'm not sure if it was the posts to the web or the 15 minutes
of escalating vocal pressure that finally moved the rock but they
capitulated. Of course it might have had something to do with the fact
that I had driven up there several times ;>))

I've no reason to return to Badger, and the only reason I was there is it is
one of a few places offering the Shen-Hao. If I'd gotten better service,
then I may very well have returned, as they do offer other products, but I
can get those somewhere else. It's not like I have to drive further, or
something. Get it? Or do you still want to relate a web transaction to
your job at the camera shop?

BTW, I don't mean to imply there's anything wrong with working retail. I
did it for years, and though the bookstore was cool, I'd have enjoyed
working in a camera shop even more...

Maybe that's because you've no serious competition in your location.
Perhaps you should try and give something other than crap service?
But then, why bother, they come back. Right?

I would like to add Calumet to the list of places to go to online or if you
live near a local store in person. They have good prices, great service. They
also have knowledgable<SP?> sales people that always seem to have enough time
to talk to you and help you do what you want or need. On more then one
occasion I went to a Calumet local to me with the intent of buying something.
The salesperson asked me what I was going to do with what I was buying and
suggested another product that was not only cheaper but was better suited to
solving the problem then what I went there wanting to buy!!

: FWIW I've gotten far better service from Badger than B&H, I no longer deal
: with B&H at all. Adorama has been great, I now use them for anything mail
: order from New York. But with any dealer I think you have to cut them a

: when a business is filling hundreds of orders a day there's going to be an

: enough and often enough something worse than you experienced with Badger
: here almost certainly will occur.
: I think in this case you wanted perfection and instead got only very good
: service. Two days late (if it was even late at all, I can't tell from your
: message) is really nothing unless you told them you needed it the next day
: for a job or something like that. The geographical distance from Badger to
: you is irrelevant, the shippers route everything through various hubs or
: central locations regardless of how near the final destination is to the
: origination point. E mail is often given very low priority by businesses.
: Many businesses receive hundreds, in some case probably thousands, of e mail
: messages a day, most of it spam. So when you want to contact a dealer it's
: best IMHO to do it by phone rather than e mail.

Hi Matt,
I have bought a lot of stuff from Jeff also and have been there many
times. He has a camera and graphics business and a map store and his mail
order operation and does it all virtually by himself. The large format
business just does not allow for a bunch of employees. Jeff is just a VERY
busy guy and has always answered my emails, briefly, but he answered them.
He is not unfriendly, he just tends to be to the point and very brief
because he is always on the run. He has stuff no one else has and for the
most part, the best prices. I hope you will reconsider about him, he is a
good guy and not a faceless corporate type..Evan Clarke >> Stay informed about: Disappointed with Badger Graphic Service |
