I'm interested in producing 3D photos with my DSLR for fun. Has
anyone out there tried this with any success. I've done a few web
searches, and it appears that there is quite a bit of information out
there, but I'd like to see what all of you have tried. Any
recommendations for techniques, software, etc.?

Actually, all I meant was old-fashioned 3D photos where you put on a
pair of filtered glasses (red/blue for BW) and you see a 3D image.
I'm curious what people have done successfully, both in color and in
BW. Do you need a special lense or can you good results in other ways
(taking 2 pictures, slightly off-set)?

the best way is a pair of cameras (which is expensive and overkill if
you use dslrs) and you'd need to synchronize the two cameras somehow.
two inexpensive compact digicams should work out well, just be sure
they have a remote shutter capability. you'll also need a bracket on
which to mount both cameras. it gets a little tricky if you want to
use flash.

another option is get some sort of sliding rail and take two pictures,
moving the camera laterally between them. obviously, this isn't going
to work for subjects that move or handheld photos. perhaps the most
convenient option is a stereo adapter, such as:

<http://www.loreo.com/pages/products/loreo_3dcap.html>

once on the computer, there's software to combine the two images for
either red/blue glasses or custom glasses. there are even 3d lcd
displays that don't require any glasses at all.

Brian's photos look like they're probably pretty good... for some
reason, I'm having a hard time seeing them, though. I'm trying the
cross-eyed thing, and it doesn't seem to be working for me.

Or at least at one time, gadgets with a few mirrors were made to use
with a standard 35 mm camera. I expect they are still available.

By 3D photos, do you mean stereograms? Like where you have 2
images side by side and you sort of cross your eyes and the
subject appears 3D?

Brian "LordV" Valentine does pretty good macro ones:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/lordv/72772818/in/set-1571779/

He just takes one shot, moves laterally to the subject about the
distance between your eyes, then takes another shot.

A while back my son messed about with this for a while, sorry, cannot
remember the name
of the software ( it was freeware), but it just created the two coloured
images the you could set the seperation to get the effect you wanted.

Something similar here..

Here are a few of those stereoscopic paintings by Dali.

Try the link below, that is how I got started and did a few stereo
pictures. Some of the pics I did turned out pretty good. The link
listed below sells a viewer, it is somewhat cheesy, just cardboard and a
couple of plastic lenses, but it does work well. Yes all you do is take
one picture and move the camera the distance between your eyes, about 7
centimeters. I think they sell an attachment for your tripod, that
allows you to take a picture and then slide your camera over the correct
distance for the second exposure. Maybe of interest, I found some high
res pictures by (can't remember) either Picasso or Dali that he painted
in stereo, I printed them out and viewed them, very impressive, hard to
believe someone could paint pictures like that.
