Some news from the Las Vegas - AZ/CA border area.
Nothin' bloomin' in the Vegas area. I spent Friday in Red Rock Canyon on
the west side of the city and the seasonal waterfalls are going full
throttle, but not a flower in sight. None north of the city, either.
Today we drove across Hoover Dam and down to Lake Havasu and back. About 10
miles or so south of Hoover Dam on the AZ side (US93), the flowers begin in
earnest. Lots of daisies (they are everywhere in the desert southwest) and
lupine. Farther south, around Kingman, AZ, the quantities increased but not
the variety. Nothing much changed until we got to Lake Havasu City (home
of the London Bridge these days). California poppies everywhere!
Drove back to Vegas on the west side of the river and turned east in
Searchlight and drove to the river at Cottonwood Cove. The most flowers of
the trip! Hillsides covered with daisies, lupine and various white, yellow,
and blue flowers I cannot identify. Even the beavertail cactus and teddy
bear cactus are fuller than I've ever seen. A couple of Joshua trees were
starting to bloom, too.
We've had a lot of rain in the southwest this winter, about an average
year's worth in about 4 months, and that will certainly lead to more growth
than usual, but the desert is so green it's spooky.
Anyone have an update on the poppies in Antelope Valley - Lancaster, CA
area? I'd like to go over there next weekend.
