Anybody can guess what kind of equipment did dan winters use for his
portraits? Light seems to be concentrated on a small area yet
soft-edged.

Fresnel spots?

If you're talking about the shot of Leonardo in particular it could even be
about a 10" reflector with a showercap diffuser and barn doors with negative
fill on the right. From the reflection in the eyes it looks like he had a
fill light near the camera as well to light his shirt and neck and his left
ear looks like there was a reflector on the left too. Again, from the size
of the reflection of the main light you could be right about the fresnel
too, but I've never used one so I couldn't be sure.

depending on which image, a variety of lights, some fresnel spots, some
large panel scrims.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
